The 5th Quarter

In February 2006, a tragic accident profoundly impacted the Abbate family and the Wake Forest football community. Luke Abbate, a vibrant sixteen-year-old, accepted a ride home from a fellow student after a practice session with his high-school team. The driver, showing reckless and irresponsible teenage behavior, was driving at nearly 90 miles-per-hour, despite Luke’s and the other passengers’ concerns. Unfortunately, the driver lost control of the car on a narrow road, causing it to spin off and plunge down an embankment nearly seventy feet below. The crash resulted in Luke sustaining devastating brain injuries, and he passed away in the hospital just two days later, shortly before his sixteenth birthday.

During his hospital stay, the Abbate family faced the heartbreaking decision to donate Luke’s organs as part of a nationwide transplant program. Multiple recipients were identified almost immediately, including a young mother suffering from severe heart disease. Because Luke and the young woman shared a rare blood type, Luke’s heart was flown across the country to her hospital, leading to a successful transplant that saved her life. This act of generosity became a symbol of hope and life amid tragedy.

Following his brother’s death, Jon Abbate struggled with the idea of continuing his football career, contemplating whether it was right to move forward. Nonetheless, he decided to honor Luke’s memory by returning to Wake Forest and changing his jersey number from 40 to 5, Luke’s number. This act of tribute reflected Jon’s dedication to keeping Luke’s spirit alive and serving as an inspiration for others.

To further commemorate Luke, the Abbate family founded The Luke Abbate 5th Quarter Foundation, which aims to educate young people nationwide about the dangers of irresponsible driving and its devastating consequences. As a moving tribute during Wake Forest football games, Jon would signal his family sitting in the stands (Section 5) by raising his hand with all five fingers extended at the end of the third quarter. Over time, this gesture became a tradition, and other players, fans, and viewers on television started participating in this silent homage.

Eventually, the final quarter of each game was called Lukes Quarter or the 5th Quarter, a symbolic period dedicated to Luke’s memory. This touching ritual united the team, fans, and community in remembrance. Despite facing significant setbacks early in the season—losing their starting quarterback, running back, and defensive end to injuries—Wake Forest went on to have their most successful season in school history, winning 11 games and only losing twice.

Coach Jim Grobe was recognized as the ACC’s Coach of the Year, while Jon Abbate delivered an outstanding performance in the ACC Championship game, recording fifteen solo tackles against a formidable Georgia Tech team. The story of Luke and Jon’s unwavering dedication became an inspiring testament to resilience, love, and the importance of responsible decision-making on and off the field.
