The Prince of Pennsylvania

Rupert Marshetta is the black sheep son of a miner who feels misunderstood and frustrated with his parents. He resents life in the town and the expectations that come with it, while secretly loving Carla, a free-spirited woman who runs a rundown roadside ice cream kiosk. The growing tension at home and his yearning for a different life push him toward drastic, impulsive ideas.

On a single day, Gary declares himself the king of Pennsylvania, with Pam as queen and Rupert as the prince who will inherit his kingdom. Both father and son know Pam has been sleeping with young miner Jack Sike, who has a newborn with his wife, adding a layer of betrayal to Rupert's view of his family.

Pam's affair with Jack Sike is revealed, bringing further strain to Rupert's already fragile family dynamic. The revelation compounds Rupert's sense of being trapped and fuels his reckless plan to escape.

Rupert teams up with Carla to kidnap Gary for $200,000, determined to use the ransom to leave the town and start a new life together. The plan is formed in secret, away from prying eyes at Carla's kiosk or a discreet meeting spot.

Rupert and Carla abduct Gary and keep him in a trailer on the outskirts, binding him to a fragile sense of control over his fate. Gary tries to reason with Rupert, but the kidnap proceeds toward its dramatic climax.

Gary tells Pam she can have half the money so she and Jack can abandon their families and run off together, a move meant to smooth the treachery with a sense of family loyalty. Pam agrees to go along, though her cooperation makes the crime more complicated and morally muddled.

During the kidnapping, Rupert and Pam learn that Gary sold the land for cash a week earlier and there is no information about where the money went. The missing funds render the ransom plan useless and heighten the stakes for everyone involved.

Rupert and Carla move Gary to the mine and hold him near a portable toilet, convinced the money is hidden inside the chained unit. Rupert starts to rig dynamite to blast the toilet open, hoping to recover the cash.

Mine rescue workers and police arrive, warning that the methane-rich mine could explode once the dynamite goes off. Gary manages to pull Rupert to safety, but Carla is presumed dead in the blast.

On the following day, Gary and Pam have reconciled their marriage. Rupert runs away and discovers Carla is alive, a fact only Joe knows, and Carla and Joe have also reconciled and are leaving for Sacramento to be closer to her daughter.

Rupert hugs Carla goodbye and tells her he would rather be handcuffed to a fridge than talk to her ever again. Carla and Joe drive off toward Sacramento to start anew, leaving Rupert heartbroken and alone on the road.

Rupert walks along the road after Carla's departure, processing the collapse of his plans and the uncertain path ahead. The rupture with Carla marks a turning point as he contemplates his future.

A lone female biker girl, who had befriended Rupert earlier, offers him a ride to Pittsburgh and he accepts, stepping into an uncertain new direction for his life.
