The Open House

After a suburban father is killed in a car accident, Naomi and her teenage son Logan decide to move into a secluded mountain chalet to await selling the house. They pack what they have and head to the remote place, hoping to start over in solitude. The move marks the quiet beginning of a stretch of uneasy days.

Naomi and Logan settle into the chalet and begin a routine centered on the odd rule: they must leave for open houses at breakfast and return after 5 p.m. The routine promises safety but also increases the sense of being watched.

From the first full day, objects shift, the home phone rings without anyone on the line, and the hot water tank's pilot keeps shutting off. Unsettling noises punctuate the quiet, making Naomi and Logan feel increasingly unsettled.

Logan spots a car idling in the driveway at night and encounters Martha, the neighbor, who speaks with a tremor of fear and hints that her husband may still be alive.

A repairman confirms that Martha’s husband did die and hints she may be dealing with Alzheimer’s, explaining her fractured memories. Naomi finds a crumpled family photo in the trash, suggesting someone is sabotaging her sense of reality. The repairman also uncovers Logan’s missing phone near the water heater, deepening the mistrust between mother and son.

That night, an intruder lurks inside the house, and Naomi and Logan return to find a candlelit dinner set on the table, as if someone has been watching them. The sense of safety collapses as they realize they may not be alone.

The authorities are unable to find concrete evidence of the intruder, and the family struggles with money, forcing Chris to stay the night on the couch for protection.

Chris disappears during the night, and later Logan finds him in his car with his throat slashed, a brutal violation that heightens the sense of danger.

An unidentified man known as The Man in Black knocks Logan unconscious and drenches him with water before leaving him outside to endure the cold while pursuing Naomi.

Naomi survives the initial assault but is bound and tortured as Logan realizes that all phones have had their SIM cards removed, cutting off their means to call for help.

In a panic, Logan lunges to defend his mother but mistakes her for the intruder and stabs her. Naomi, though injured, tells him to run and that help must come from elsewhere.

Logan, his contact lenses removed, stumbles through the freezing woods toward a stream, enduring hypothermia until dawn and clinging to life.

The intruder finally reveals himself, seizing Logan in the cold and strangling him to death by the stream, ending the immediate danger but closing the family's story in silence.

The film ends with the open road away from the chalet, a stark reminder that some homes become prisons and danger may follow even after escape.
