A bus crash caused by faulty steering leaves Jim Ackland with a serious brain injury and a tragedy—the death of a young girl under his care. Wracked with guilt, he tries to go on, twice attempting to take his own life during the long, difficult recovery. He begins anew as an industrial chemist and secures a room in a hotel, building a quiet, solitary routine. When he reluctantly accepts an invitation for a night out, he meets Jenny Carden, the sister of his colleague Harry Carden. Their relationship soon grows into something regular and hopeful, and Jim opens up about his wish to marry her, provided he feels sure his recovery is complete.
Meanwhile, one of the other hotel residents, Molly Newman, asks to borrow £30. With money tight, Jim agrees to write her a cheque instead of handing over cash. That very night, Molly is found strangled, casting a pall over the hotel and thrusting Jim into a dangerous glare of suspicion. The evidence begins to mount: a cheque recovered from the crime scene, Jim’s head injury, and the fact that he admits to having walked near the murder site.
Detective Inspector Godby narrows in on Jim as the prime suspect, hinting that he might have been another of Molly’s suitors and suggesting that Jim, having fallen for Jenny, wanted to silence a possible blackmailer. The case tightens when Jim learns that Mr Peachy, the man who lived directly below Molly, had lied to the police about Jim’s nightly presence in Molly’s room. In a tense confrontation, Peachy finally admits to killing Molly, driven by jealousy and a pattern of financial support he had supplied her; Jim’s loan had fed into that volatile mix.
Frustrated, Jim goes to the police, only to be dismissed and left with little recourse. He bolts from custody and shadows Peachy to Paddington Station, where Peachy plans a flight out of the country. Jim phones [Det. Insp. Godby], but the tip seems to fall on deaf ears, and the weight of the moment pushes him toward another dark impulse. Then a crucial clue surfaces: a letter Molly had posted to Wilcox just before her death, tying Peachy to the crime. Peachy is arrested, and the momentum shifts. In the end, Jenny finds Jim and shares the long-awaited news that justice is catching up with the killer, offering him a fragile but hopeful sense of closure.
