A pervasive sense of tension lingers beneath the polite veneer of pubs, railway stations and bustling shops, reminding viewers that even a harmless remark can ripple far beyond the speaker’s intent.

At the heart of the story a diligent British security officer is assigned to shadow the movements of the 95th Infantry, a unit whose operations are of keen interest to both home‑grown and foreign intelligence eyes. While the officer watches the soldiers, a parallel thread follows German espionage agents working to extract information from the same civilian currents. Agent 23 is sent into England to listen for the slightest slip of the tongue, while his counterpart Agent 16 moves in the shadows, underscoring how ordinary conversations become prized intel in a world at war.

The human side of the intrigue is embodied by a modest bookshop in Westport. Its proprietor, Mr Barratt, employs a resourceful Dutch refugee, Beppie Leemans, whose quiet presence in the shop places her at the crossroads of military secrecy and civilian life. Their interactions hint at how ordinary livelihoods can be drawn into the clandestine dance of spycraft, while an ATS driver’s routine assistance becomes a brief, unguarded glimpse into the larger conflict. The film balances these personal moments with the relentless undercurrent of suspicion that colors every exchange.

Even the closing scenes echo this motif, showing two seemingly carefree passengers—Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne—engaged in idle banter on a train, their words subtly observed by an unseen ear.
