Jane Fonda stars as Alexandra Sternbergen, a washed-up, alcoholic actress who performs under the stage name Viveca Van Loren, and she wakes up on Thanksgiving 1986 beside the bloodied body of a sleazy photographer named Bobby Korshack in his Los Angeles loft. Suffering a heavy hangover, she cannot recall the events of the night before, and in a desperate bid to make sense of what happened she phones her estranged husband, Raúl Juliá as Joaquin “Jacky” Manero, a salon owner, who insists she report the crime to the police. Refusing to go quietly, Alexandra tries to flee the city, only to be stymied by the crush of holiday travelers and the sense that the truth might slip away with the crowds.

In a tense twist of fate, a chance encounter in a parking garage leads Alexandra to a ride downtown from Turner Kendall, a former police officer who has his own scars from a life in the force. Jeff Bridges brings a wary, protective energy to the role as Turner Kendall, a man who becomes drawn into Alexandra’s perilous morning-after scramble. Diane Salinger plays Isabel Harding, a figure whose glamorous exterior conceals a hazardous secret. The dizzying evening takes a dark turn when Turner unexpectedly appears at the dinner, and chaos erupts as Jacky incapacitates Turner with a vase in a bid to protect his own secrets.
