Miguel is focused on his schoolwork while his mother, Rosa, handles daily chores in their home in Mexico. Their peaceful existence is shattered when a warning arrives that the cartel is after them, forcing them to flee their home urgently.

The cartel leader, Mauricio Guerrero, sends a strong message to Rosa by hanging her brother, Carlos's body near an overpass. This brutal act instills fear in Rosa and Miguel, as they realize the extent of danger they face from the cartel.

In Arizona, retired marine Jim Hanson spends his days patrolling the border, dealing with his personal troubles such as foreclosure and isolation. He finds solace in the company of his dog, Jackson, and his stepdaughter, Sarah, who is a police officer.
