The Mansion of Madness

Gaston LeBlanc travels with Julien, Blanche and Henri to the mountain psychiatric hospital. They are halted at the gates by aggressive guards who terrify Blanche. The group is kept from entering as a sense of menace hangs over the hospital.

Gaston is introduced to Dr. Maillard and his niece Eugénie. He observes Maillard's so-called soothing system and notes how the patients roam freely, displaying manic and violent behaviors under the doctor's influence. The encounter plants the seed of suspicion in Gaston's mind.

A gang attacks the carriage carrying Julien and Blanche, overwhelming driver Henri. Julien and Blanche flee on foot into the surrounding woods, where Blanche is captured and Julien is tortured but eventually escapes, still bound.

Blanche is captured by the raiders in the forest and brutally assaulted. The violence outside the hospital underscores the danger and brutality of the attackers.

During his first night at the asylum, Gaston has a hallucinatory dream that unsettles him. He accuses Maillard of being an imposter, suggesting abuse and control over Eugénie. The scene deepens the tension between observer and doctor.

Maillard explains that although Eugénie appears calm, she is more dangerous and violent than she seems. He asserts control over the patients and over Eugénie herself. Gaston begins to question the doctor's methods.

In Maillard's dungeon, innocent people are chained, tortured, and placed in glass cages. They are forced to participate in gruesome games of ritual slaughter under Maillard's orchestrations. The scene establishes the hospital as a site of corruption.

Gaston escapes his quarters to search for Eugénie, whom he has seen taken away by guards. He finds and frees Eugénie and encounters Julien along the way. Before they can regroup, the trio is captured again by Maillard's guards.

Julien locates Eugénie's real father, the true Dr. Maillard, imprisoned with the driver Henri. The revelation complicates the illusion of Maillard's identity. The group learns the true stakes of the hospital's power.

Maillard orchestrates a ritualized, Dionysian gathering with himself as ringleader. Gaston and Eugénie are sentenced to be executed by fire. The tension culminates as escape seems possible at the last moment.

The original staff, including Eugénie's father, and the driver Henri escape their confinement and attack the hospital. They reclaim control just before Gaston's scheduled execution. The false Maillard is cornered in the chaos.

Blanche shoots the impostor Maillard and proclaims Viva la revolución. The murder removes the tyrant at the center of the hospital's corruption. Gaston, Julien and Blanche seize the opportunity to leave.

Gaston, Julien, and Blanche depart the asylum in the carriage they arrived in, leaving the hospital behind. The trio rides away amid the aftermath of the rebellion. The ordeal ends as they distance themselves from the mountains.
