Computer game designer Brendan and his wife, Claire, are engulfed in grief following the tragic drowning of their daughter Sam, who perished while trying to rescue her Curious George doll from the ocean. As they reluctantly sift through Sam’s belongings, Brendan stumbles upon a copy of The Berenstain Bears. To their astonishment, both Brendan and his brother-in-law Matt distinctly remember the title with an “e” as Berenstein, despite finding no proof that such a change ever existed. This revelation leads them on a journey to explore numerous instances of the so-called “Mandela Effect,” where they identify shared but erroneous memories.

Their investigation reveals further discrepancies, including a vivid recollection that Sam’s doll once had a tail—a detail they uncover to be untrue. Driven by desperation, Brendan theorizes that these inconsistencies stem from shifts across parallel universes, positing that Sam may still be alive in one of them. Ignoring the skepticism of Claire and Matt, he embarks on a quest to track down Dr. Fuchs, a scientist whose theories about the nature of reality have led him to be ostracized.

Dr. Fuchs’s research presents a haunting perspective: our universe may be a computer simulation, with the Mandela Effect emerging as a means of rewriting reality to shield its inhabitants from recognizing the truth. They begin collaborating on a groundbreaking computer program designed to disrupt the simulation, which they intend to execute on the quantum computer of Dr. Fuchs’ former campus.

As Brendan delves deeper into this pursuit, the strain on his life and marriage becomes increasingly pronounced. He begins experiencing visions of Sam that are initially invisible to others. However, one day, against all odds, Sam inexplicably appears to be alive, becoming visible to everyone around her. Initially bewildered by this phenomenon, Brendan seeks out Dr. Fuchs again, only to receive the devastating news that he died by suicide two months prior. Having spoken with him merely hours before, Brendan realizes that this alteration is the simulation’s desperate maneuver to thwart their efforts.

Pushed to finish the program rapidly, Brendan breaks into the college and runs it on the quantum computer. As the simulation falters, glitches wreak havoc on reality, and Brendan rushes back home. In a poignant moment, the family embraces tightly as the simulation crashes.

The simulation then restarts, reassembling the history of the universe anew. This time, they find themselves at the beach once more, where Brendan gently advises Sam to forgo taking her Curious George doll—now without a tail—into the water. This crucial decision ultimately saves Sam’s life and allows the simulation to persist beyond the catastrophic event that originally led to its unraveling.
