A man arrives late at night in Helsinki by train and, exhausted, dozes off on a park bench. Here, he unexpectedly falls victim to an attack by three criminals. The aftermath leaves him in a coma, and he is declared dead at the hospital. Just when all hope seems lost, he awakens and, still bearing his bandages, escapes the institution. The next morning, the Nieminen family, who inhabit an abandoned shipping container at the port, finds him by the sea and takes him in, nursing him back to health. However, the man struggles with amnesia and cannot even remember his own name.
The marginalized community living in the harbor rallies around him, helping him embark on a new chapter of his life. Anttila, a resilient harbor guard who facilitates makeshift housing in vacant shipping containers, arranges one for him. Despite his determination to find employment, the man faces multiple obstacles stemming from his lack of memory and identity, leading to setbacks at the employment office. Fortunately, he crosses paths with Irma, a compassionate volunteer with the Salvation Army, who aids him in securing a job at their thrift store. During his time there, he motivates the Salvation Army band to embrace rhythm music in their performances and persuades their leader to join as a vocalist. Amid these developments, a romantic bond blossoms between him and Irma.
The sight of welders at the shipyard ignites a faint recollection; he realizes he is a welder by profession. A job offer arises, but to join the shipyard’s payroll, he must open a bank account, which proves impossible due to his nameless status. His situation worsens when he unintentionally witnesses a bank robbery. When he attempts to report this to the police, they dismiss his claims, leading to his incarceration. Fortunately, a lawyer from the Salvation Army intervenes and orchestrates his release. Later, at a bar, he encounters the bank robber, who divulges his motivation—a deep-seated resentment against the bank for driving his earthmoving company into bankruptcy and leaving his employees unpaid. He promises to return the stolen funds to those affected. Shortly thereafter, the bank robber tragically takes his own life.
The police eventually reveal the man’s identity when his wife from Nurmes recognizes him in a newspaper regarding the robbery. Shocked, Irma ends their relationship, leaving him despondent. He returns to Nurmes where he reconciles with his wife, only to learn their marriage crumbled due to his gambling addiction. Resolute, he decides to reclaim his life in Helsinki.
Upon returning to the harbor, he encounters the same three criminals who had assaulted him earlier. Yet, the residents of the harbor, led by Anttila, unite to confront them and ultimately achieve victory. In the end, he and Irma reconcile, strolling hand in hand through the harbor, their path accompanied by the poignant song “Muistatko Monrepos’n,” sung by Annikki Tähti.
