In Bonn, 1974, Sophie Zimmermann works for the West German Federal Ministry of Defence, secretly copying top secret documents for six months. Her routine passes unnoticed until a tense interrogation by a superior reveals the mounting risk around her covert activity. The plan she’s drawn into begins to unravel as she realizes she could become a pawn in international espionage.

The two prisoners grow closer through shared suffering and exchange stories: Sophie reveals the top-secret information she passed to Dieter, while the Englishman recounts his dangerous solo attempts to smuggle his Russian girlfriend to the West. They secretly bond and decide to escape together despite the risk.

It is revealed that the person who abducted Sophie is actually the Englishman, an MI6 agent, turning their captivity on its head. They realize they are not in East Germany but in a safe house somewhere in rural North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany. The misdirection of the Stasi story becomes a manipulation by those who control the narrative.

Because the West German constitution bars torture and killing of its citizens, the BND instead deploys the MI6 agent to determine how much Sophie knew and what she passed to the Stasi, including details about missile locations. The exchange becomes a test of loyalty and truth rather than punishment. The revelation shifts the stakes from punishment to information control.

Sophie finally escapes the hotel, but she is chased through its darkened, abandoned corridors. She manages to outpace her pursuers, using the hotel’s labyrinth to gain distance and safety. The tension escalates as the lines between allies and enemies blur.

In the chaos, Sophie traps the MI6 agent-turned-captor in another cell within the hotel. This shocking reversal exposes the depth of deception at play and forces Sophie to confront the moral cost of her actions.
