The Englishman, an MI6 agent, posed as a fellow prisoner to gain Sophie's trust and extract information about what she had shared with the Stasi. This psychological manipulation was part of a coordinated intelligence operation between the BND and MI6 to determine the extent of Sophie's treason without directly implicating West German authorities.

His detailed knowledge of escape attempts and precise timing raise questions about how a fellow prisoner could know so much about the facility's layout.

The West German constitution prohibits BND intelligence agents from torturing or killing West German citizens.
