The Madwoman of Chaillot

A group of powerful men gather in a Paris café to discuss how to increase their fortunes. The Prospector arrives with a chilling offer: there is oil beneath Paris, but each man must reveal a terrible secret first. The atmosphere tightens as greed and danger mingle with the scent of coffee and risk.

The Prospector reveals that Chaillot’s earth is 'soggy with oil,' and that the secrets of the men are the price of knowledge. He declares they will pursue mineral rights regardless of the will of the people. A gnawing realization passes among them that their scheme is already spiraling out of control.

They resolve to acquire the mineral rights with or without the consent of Paris’s citizens. The plan moves from private ambition to a cold, concrete scheme that ignores the will of the people. The air thickens with a dangerous resolve as the clock ticks toward action.

Countess Aurelia, the ‘madwoman,’ learns of the plot from Roderick and the Ragpicker. She gathers her eccentric circle, including Constance with an invisible dog and Gabrielle with an invisible beau, to resist the threat. The Countess begins organizing a counter-plan from her own high-spirited corner of Paris.

The Countess announces her intention to exterminate the conspirators and stages proceedings in her cellar. A mock trial unfolds as she commands the proceedings, while she seeks to condemn the men she perceives as a danger to the city. The plan is dark, but the alliance among the little people provides a glimmer of resistance.

The Ragpicker serves as defense counsel, then asks to speak directly as a defendant. He swears to lie, steal, and distort everything, yet his testimony reveals truth in defiance of his oath. The damning statements seal the conspirators’ fate and expose the Countess’s vigilante justice.

The trial ends with the conspirators found guilty and Aurelia granted permission to exterminate them. The crowd applauds the display of power, but a solemn gravity remains in the wake of the verdict. The scene exposes the tension between revolutionary justice and the cost of tyranny.

Aurelia unlocks the ironbound door to the space beneath the basement and a rush of wind spills into the room. She then lies down to rest, as Roderick drapes a boa over her and she dreams of her lost love, Alphonse Berteau. The dream blurs into waking life as the moment turns haunted and intimate.

The conspirators arrive on time and Aurelia leads them down into the basement through the open door, into darkness. She points the way with a simple command: Straight down, there are no turns. One by one they vanish into the unknown, leaving only the echo of their footsteps behind.

Irma and Roderick descend the stairs and witness a moment of farewell. Aurelia asks Irma to tell a loved line to Roderick before it’s too late, a personal note amid the political storm. The scene heightens the conflict between personal longing and collective revolt.

Roderick hands Aurelia the key, and the lovers share a kiss as she leaves them behind. The act marks a poignant choice between the revolutionary path and intimate ties. The heavy basement door closes on the surface world as the conspirators vanish behind it.

In the morning, Aurelia returns the precious newspaper to the Ragpicker, signaling that she has moved on to another year. The moment marks an ending and a shift in her personal revolution, even as Paris’ greed remains. The film closes on a note of unresolved tension between power and humanity.
