What Happens at the End of The Long Walk?

How The Long Walk (2022) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The film adaptation of The Long Walk delivers a conclusion that diverges significantly from Stephen King's original novel while preserving its haunting spirit. In this version, Peter McVries emerges as the sole survivor of the brutal endurance contest, but his victory comes at a devastating cost. Throughout the walk, McVries had established himself as a moral center among the competitors, repeatedly saving his friend Raymond Garraty from collapse and speaking of using his potential win for a greater good. However, when only the two friends remain, Garraty makes a pivotal choice—he refuses to let McVries sacrifice himself and instead forces his friend to accept victory, allowing himself to be gunned down in an act of devastating self-sacrifice.

What makes this ending so powerful is how it subverts McVries's earlier idealism. Rather than using the winner's "wish" for something noble as he had once promised, Garraty's death shatters him completely. The young man who preached morality and purpose transforms into something far more dangerous, using his granted wish not for healing but for revenge, demanding a weapon to destroy the Major and the authoritarian system he represents. The film suggests that survival in such a cruel contest does not leave its winner whole—it breaks them, replacing hope with fury.

This conclusion stands in stark contrast to the book's ending, where Garraty wins and walks past the Major toward a mysterious dark figure, representing a more existential form of brokenness. While both endings leave their protagonists fundamentally altered, the film chooses anger over detachment, grounding its tragedy in the fiery aftermath of lost friendship rather than the hollow silence of a survivor who has lost his soul. The message remains clear: no one truly wins the Long Walk. The competition strips away humanity piece by piece, and even victory is simply another form of defeat.
