At a Manhattan teaching hospital, the life of Dr. Bock, the Chief of Medicine, is utterly chaotic. He is grappling with personal turmoil, having left his wife, while his children have chosen not to communicate with him. To make matters worse, the once-revered teaching hospital is spiraling into disarray.

Amidst this tumult, the hospital is faced with the inexplicable deaths of two doctors and a nurse. These tragedies are casually labeled as unlucky coincidences or unavoidable instances of failed medical treatment.

Simultaneously, hospital administrators confront protests stemming from the hospital’s plan to annex a nearby decrepit apartment building. This annexation is intended to create a drug rehabilitation center, yet the current residents demand alternative housing before the condemned building is demolished.

Dr. Bock finds himself at a perilous low, admitting to feelings of impotence and contemplating the unthinkable act of suicide. However, a glimmer of hope arrives in the form of Barbara Drummond, a patient’s daughter who, alongside her father from Mexico, comes to the hospital for medical care. Her challenging and engaging spirit reignites a sense of purpose within Dr. Bock, giving him a reason to persist.

Unbeknownst to them, the deaths are traced back to Barbara’s father, who seeks revenge against the so-called “inhumanity” of modern healthcare practices. He boldly claims that the medical professionals would have saved their lives with timely and proper treatment had it been administered, but sadly, they did not. In a desperate bid to shield Barbara from the grotesque truth, Dr. Bock and she take advantage of the unforeseen death of another doctor at the hospital to conceal her father’s culpability.

As Barbara prepares to return to Mexico with her father, Dr. Bock grapples with his choices. Initially planning to accompany them, his sense of responsibility ultimately tethers him to the hospital, preventing it from spiraling into complete chaos.
