The Hateful Eight (2015) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Warren kills Smithers after revealing that during the Civil War at Baton Rouge, Smith's son commanded Confederate soldiers who murdered Warren's men after they surrendered and were tortured. Warren exploits Smith's guilt and fear, shooting him in the head while he's distracted, avenging the Black Union soldiers who were brutalized.

Foreshadowing: Warren's earlier story about killing a Confederate soldier's son foreshadows his willingness to use wartime atrocities as leverage.

The film ends with Warren and Mannix as the sole survivors, both severely wounded. Warren reads a letter from Lincoln to comfort Mannix as they await death from their injuries. The letter's message about hope and perseverance becomes a moment of shared humanity between former enemies. They die together, with the camera pulling back to reveal the frozen landscape.
