In the turbulent year of 1858, a group of male slaves find themselves shackled and en route after being purchased by the Speck Brothers, Ace and Dicky. Among them is Django, portrayed by Jamie Foxx, who has been forcefully separated from his beloved wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington).

As fate would have it, the Speck Brothers cross paths with the enigmatic Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), a German dentist hiding his true identity as a bounty hunter. With determination, Schultz disrupts their journey and inquires if there is a slave familiar with the Brittle brothers, notorious overseers linked to Django’s past. When Django acknowledges that he knows the Brittle brothers, Schultz offers him a chance at freedom along with a reward of $75 for his assistance. With that, they leave Dicky to face the wrath of the other slaves.

Their journey continues to Daughtrey, where Django, despite being barred from entering a saloon, accompanies Schultz. Their presence triggers an alarm, leading to the sheriff confronting them with deadly intentions. Schultz swiftly retaliates, shooting the sheriff and declaring that he is after a dangerous cattle rustler with a hefty bounty. Using this as leverage, he convinces the sheriff to pay him for his services.

The duo targets the Brittle brothers at the plantation of Spencer “Big Daddy” Bennett (Don Johnson). When Schultz pretends to want to purchase a slave girl, Django uses the opportunity to gather information. He discovers that the Brittle brothers are hiding out at the estate. In an intense confrontation, Django confronts and kills them, showcasing his exceptional marksmanship, which impresses Schultz.

As their bounty hunting partnership flourishes, Django learns the painful details of his past: he and Broomhilda tried to escape from a cruel owner, Curracan. Their attempt failed, leading to their brutal branding and separation during a slave auction. As winter passes, Django proves himself as a proficient bounty hunter, eventually connecting with Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), a ruthless plantation owner who exploits his slaves in brutal fights known as “Mandingo fights”.

Spotting an opportunity to secure Broomhilda’s freedom, Schultz and Django devise a plan to feign interest in purchasing one of Candie’s fighters. They initiate a generous offer of $12,000 to draw Candie’s interest, cleverly concealing their true intentions. As they travel to the Candyland plantation, they secretly communicate with Broomhilda to reveal their ruse.

However, their plans begin to unravel when Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), a shrewd house slave, suspects their motives. Confronted with this knowledge, Candie escalates the stakes, demanding a steep price for Broomhilda’s freedom. In a moment of desperation and disgust, Schultz shoots Candie, leading to a violent exchange that leaves chaos in its wake.

In the fallout of the betrayal, Django is captured and tortured, only to cleverly escape his fate by convincing his captors of a bounty on outlaws at the plantation. With newfound freedom, Django returns to Candyland, unleashing revenge upon Candie’s men and ultimately liberating Broomhilda. The climax culminates in a dramatic shootout, where Django confronts his enemies and ignites the plantation’s downfall in a spectacular explosion, riding away with Broomhilda by his side, finally free from the chains of their past.
