The Hateful Eight

Years after the tumultuous Civil War, Major Marquis Warren, a bounty hunter portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, embarks on a perilous journey to transport three lifeless bounties to the town of Red Rock, Wyoming. Battling the fierce onset of a blizzard, Warren encounters a stagecoach driven by a man named O.B. Jackson. This stagecoach is the final vehicle departing the area before the harsh weather settles in, making it imperative for Warren to reach Minnie’s Haberdashery to take refuge from the impending storm.

The journey is anything but straightforward, as another bounty hunter, John Ruth, aka ‘The Hangman,’ brilliantly portrayed by Kurt Russell, is also aboard the stagecoach. Ruth is handcuffed to the fierce and defiant fugitive, Daisy Domergue, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, who carries a substantial bounty of $10,000 on her head. Tensions rise between Warren and Ruth as they navigate their differing philosophies on capturing bounties, with Ruth emphasizing the importance of bringing them in alive, while Warren believes that doing so only empowers the bounties to scheme against their captors.

The dynamic further complicates when they are joined by Chris Mannix, a former Lost-Causer militiaman, masterfully portrayed by Walton Goggins, who claims he’s on his way to become Red Rock’s new sheriff. With the stakes even higher, Mannix attempts to broker an uneasy alliance, proposing that he can guarantee both bounty hunters their pay upon his swearing-in.

As the group progresses, an underlying mistrust festers, leading Warren and Ruth to question each other’s intentions. A series of heated exchanges uncover old war grievances and racist animosities, igniting tensions that could unravel their fragile alliance. When the blizzard forces them to find shelter at Minnie’s Haberdashery, they meet a sinister collection of characters, including Oswaldo Mobray, played by Tim Roth, Joe Gage, portrayed by Michael Madsen, and Sanford Smithers, a former Confederate general played by Bruce Dern.

The Haberdashery becomes a stage for deception, where the line between friend and foe is blurred. Mannix’s growing suspicion of Warren’s “forged” Lincoln letter ignites further conflicts. In a shocking turn of events, Warren kills Smithers, avenging the injustices faced by African American soldiers at Baton Rouge. Meanwhile, the story takes an even darker twist as the group faces a hidden threat: Jody Domergue, brilliantly portrayed by Channing Tatum, along with other lurking gang members, orchestrate chaos.

Amidst the unfolding violence, the stakes heighten as Mannix and Warren confront both Daisy and the poisoner, Gage. A series of betrayals results in a deadly showdown where Daisy’s recklessness leads to the demise of Ruth and spirals the group deeper into a web of tension and mistrust. As the gunfire erupts, Mannix and Warren, who sustain catastrophic injuries, make a final stand against the remaining foes, determined to protect their respective bounties and seek justice for the fallen.

The film culminates in a gripping and relentless battle of wits and survival, reflecting on themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the haunting legacy of their pasts.
