The Handmaiden

Set against the backdrop of 1930s Korea, before the onset of World War II, the story unfolds with a local woman named Sook-Hee [haesuk-kim] preparing for an important move. She is destined to serve as a handmaiden to the Japanese heiress, Lady Hideko [minhee-kim], at her sprawling estate nestled in the countryside. Upon her arrival, Sook-Hee is greeted and given a tour, which includes an annex transformed into a library filled with rare and valuable books. The lady of the house, who affectionately begins to call her Tamako, tells Sook-Hee that she will not be sleeping in servitude quarters, but rather close to her in the main house.

As night falls, Sook-Hee wakes to Lady Hideko screaming from a nightmare, revealing a haunting past involving her aunt’s ghost. She comforts the heiress, showcasing her dedication as a handmaiden by soothing her with sake and lullabies. However, Sook-Hee has an agenda of her own as she reveals through voice-over that she is not merely a handmaiden but a skilled pickpocket named Sook-Hee, raised by someone who taught her the art of deceit.

In a flashback, we discover the dark truths behind the house she now serves. The estate has a history of taking in abandoned infants and selling them off. Count Fujiwara, a man with nefarious plans, wishes to marry Lady Hideko for her fortune, intending to declare her insane and claim her wealth. He manipulates Sook-Hee into being the instrument of this plan—her task is to convince Hideko to fall in love with him. In return, Sook-Hee is promised a handsome reward, but she demands more than the count is willing to offer.

As Sook-Hee settles in, she experiences the dynamics of the household, and the unease of her new environment begins to surface. The staff’s antics, including stealing from her, irritate Sook-Hee, yet she remains enamored by Lady Hideko’s beauty. Under the pretense of being a loyal maid, she uses a fake reference letter, a forgery at the hand of Count Fujiwara [jinwoong-jo], to cement her position.

While attempting to win over Lady Hideko, Sook-Hee soon realizes the depths of her affection towards her, blurring lines between manipulation and genuine feelings. Sook-Hee’s growing attachment becomes complicated as she witnesses Lady Hideko’s interactions with Count Fujiwara. The two women share intimate moments that deepen their connection while Sook-Hee grapples with her role in this deceptive game.
