Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan

Ainu, Lily Ho, an unsuspecting young girl, is abducted and sold to the Four Seasons brothel run by Madam Chun, Betty Pei Ti. Inside the gaudy, suffocating world of the brothel, new arrivals are stripped naked, tied down, and inspected for flaws. When Madam Chun learns that one girl was deflowered by a kidnapper before she could begin work, she hunts the man down and kills him as he tries to run. Ainu refuses to submit to the brutal methods imposed on her sisters, and her fiery resistance sparks constant clashes with Chun’s cruel regime. For her stubborn defiance, she is jailed and subjected to brutal punishment, with Chun personally licking the wounds on Ainu’s back after the whipping.

Ainu forms a fragile bond with a mute young man who tends to her in the cell, a figure she later pleads with to rescue her. He communicates in quiet gestures that he cannot break her out at that moment, even as she begs him for help. The quiet tension between them deepens the sense that someone will have to choose courage over safety.

Soon a group of rich nobles arrives to bet on the brothel’s courtesans. Madam Chun unveils Ainu, dressed anew and made up, to the buyers, and the night’s winner is Master Wei, Fang Mian. Wei sedates her before raping her, and then a procession of nobles take their turns, each inflicting a similar, brutal violation. The trauma drives Ainu toward despair, and she attempts to hang herself in her bedroom, only to be saved by the mute Yan. In a rare moment of honesty, Yan reveals that he can speak—and that Ainu reminds him of a long-lost love, which is why he feels compelled to help her. When he tries to carry her away from the brothel, Chun and her guards intervene, and Yan fights but is quickly killed. With no other option, Ainu relinquishes resistance and becomes a compliant courtesan, even pleasuring Chun herself, who grows increasingly infatuated with her.

Sometime later, Master Yiao is found dead, and the village’s Chief Constable Chi Te, Elliot Ngok Wah, pays a guarded visit. Ainu skillfully avoids his questions, ducking behind her own carefully spun version of events. Chun is warned by one of her men that Ainu is dangerous and could kill again. The night comes when Wei arranges another encounter; the Chief Constable seeks to intervene, but Wei dies in a fire sparked by Ainu, and there isn’t enough evidence to arrest her. The Chief Constable is told he may be Ainu’s next target, but he ignores the warning and is later killed by an overdose administered during an orgy, a calculated move by Ainu. Ainu slips away again, her plan inching toward its final act.

The last noble to take her on invites her to his private chambers, but she uses cunning and seduction to lower his guard long enough to stab him. When guards and the Chief Constable burst into the room, Ainu reveals the full scope of her experience—how she was abducted and sold, and the horrors she endured—exposing the true villains behind her suffering. What follows is an all-out rebellion as Ainu fights to free the other courtesans and overturn the corrupt order of the brothel. Madam Chun, blinded by her love for Ainu, sides with her in the melee, and the two manage to kill all the guards. Chun is left grievously wounded, and Ainu explains that this entire sequence was a meticulously planned revenge—she never truly loved Chun and instead turned others’ love into a weapon against those who harmed her.

In a final, devastating moment, Chun confesses that she still loves Ainu and requests one last kiss. Ainu complies, but Chun reveals a poison capsule hidden in her mouth that now eats away at both of them. Ainu writhes in agony and collapses, as the Chief Constable arrives too late to witness the end of Ainu’s vengeance. The tragedy closes on a quiet, haunting note: justice comes at a terrible cost, and the truth of what was done to Ainu is finally laid bare for those who survive to hear it.
