The Full Monty follows the journey of six laid-off steelworkers in the North of England as they navigate the challenges of unemployment. The characters, including Gaz (portrayed by Tom Wilkinson), his best friend Dave (Mark Addy), and his son Nathan, along with Lomper, the mill’s security guard, Gerald, the former foreman, the flamboyant dancer Horse, and the well-endowed yet rhythmically challenged Guy, are initially inspired to strip after witnessing a local male strip show that sends the women into a frenzy.
While brainstorming ways to earn money to settle their bills amidst their financial constraints, Gaz’s character wrestles with his role as a father. He struggles with his relationship with Nathan, who he has with his ex-wife Mandy. Their interaction showcases his earnest attempt at fatherhood, even though he is criticized for being unreliable and failing to meet his child support obligations.
As the group begins their rehearsals, there are moments of desperation, such as when Gaz needs to pay a £100 booking fee for the performance, which he cannot afford. Thankfully, Nathan steps up, using his savings to help secure the venue, keeping the dream alive. Despite setbacks, including Dave’s crisis about his weight that leads him to drop out and join a different profession, Gaz’s tenacity shines through, illustrated when he confronts Dave during a shopping trip and resorts to petty theft.
The preparations take a comedic turn when the group flaunts their daring concepts to two intrigued women and later, conducts a cheeky public dress rehearsal in a warehouse. The hilarity escalates when they are caught by a patrolling policeman, resulting in an indecent exposure arrest for some members of the group, keeping Gaz from musical support he desperately needs from Nathan.
Now living at Gaz’s home after being kicked out due to financial troubles, Gerald adds to the group’s dynamic. In the climactic moments of the film, a memorable performance unfolds at the club, despite the presence of a policeman that initially intimidates Gaz. Encouraged by Nathan, he ultimately embraces the moment, leading to an exuberant finale where the group performs their audacious strip act, showcasing their camaraderie and resilience.
