Set in New Mexico around the turn of the 20th century and told in flashback, the story centers on Jeb Rand, a man whose family was slaughtered when he was a child. After the massacre, he is found by widow Mrs Callum, who raises him as her own along with her daughter Thor and her son Adam. Jeb carries the trauma in his mind as recurring nightmares that offer only fragments of that night, shaping how he trusts, loves, and fights his way through life.

As time passes, a long-standing feud between the Rands and the Callums comes to light. Mrs Callum confronts her brother-in-law, Grant, and the truth behind the killings surfaces: Jeb’s father, with whom Mrs Callum was involved, killed her husband, and Grant exacted a brutal revenge by slaughtering Jeb’s family. The tale of that fateful night grows even darker when it’s revealed that Grant’s arm was severely injured in the melee, leaving him with a lasting wound and a desire for vengeance. Mrs Callum pleads with Grant to leave Jeb alone, insisting that the boy means no threat, but Grant’s motive to erase the Rand line remains a driving force behind the decades-long feud.

Years later, in 1898, the nation is sending volunteers to the Spanish-American War. Jeb and Adam are forced to decide who will enlist, and after a coin toss, Jeb loses and joins up. His time in the service wounds him physically and mentally; he is injured in battle, hospitalized, and later honorably discharged, receiving the Medal of Honor for his sacrifices. The experience deepens the haunting memories of the night his family was murdered, and returning home fails to erase the fear that something dangerous still trails him. He and Thor have been secretly close for years, and his homecoming pushes him to seek a life with her, but she is cautious, insisting she wants to choose her own path to marriage.

A private moment of discovery shifts the balance. Jeb stumbles upon an abandoned ranch he feels he has seen before, and his mother confirms that this is the place where he lived with his real parents and where the night of the killings unfolded. Adam reveals money set aside for him and proclaims the family’s wealth should be divided among the three siblings, dubbing Jeb’s portion the “Rand share.” Tensions flare as Adam resents the idea of sharing with his half-brother, and the two men confront one another in a brutal, fistful fight. Jeb leaves that confrontation with a vow: he will return the next day for Thor, and if Adam tries to block him, he will kill him.

A big-win night at the casino changes Jeb’s fortunes and Jake Dingle invites him to become a partner in the business. The victory is tempered by danger, however, as Adam ambushes Jeb on his way home from the casino and is killed in self-defense. Although Jeb is acquitted in court, the town’s people—and especially Thor and Mrs Callum—shun him, convinced that he is dead to them. Without family, job, or home, Jeb accepts Dingle’s offer and rises as a co-owner of the casino, moving forward with a precarious peace.

Months pass, and life grows more complex as Thor becomes engaged to a man named Prentice. The couple plans to attend a town dance, but Grant’s influence is not far behind: he needles Prentice to defend Thor’s honor, pushing the situation toward a deadly confrontation. A street gunfight erupts; Jeb again must defend himself, and he once more kills in self-defense.

Despite the outward calm, Thor and Mrs Callum quietly plot revenge for the pain Jeb has caused. Thor pretends to forgive him, agreeing to marry him, but the plan to murder him on their wedding night never comes to fruition—she cannot bring herself to complete the act and chooses reconciliation instead. Yet the past cannot stay buried. Grant gathers a gang and chases Jeb across the desert, intent on finishing the vendetta that has stretched for years. In the climactic memory, Jeb recalls the night of the massacre: Grant’s hand in the killings, Mrs Callum’s complicity, and the web of guilt that binds them all.

Facing his legacy, Jeb confronts the truth—and Mrs Callum, moved by guilt and love, shoots Grant dead just as he is about to enact the last act of vengeance. In a final moment of forgiveness, Mrs Callum asks for absolution from Jeb and Thor and urges them to look to the future and savor the life they can still share together.
