Late-19th-century London provides the backdrop as Adelaide, Maureen O’Hara, a member of the affluent Culver family, defies her relatives by marrying her drawing teacher, Henry Lambert, Dana Andrews, an impoverished artist, and moving into his flat on Britannia Mews. Adelaide hopes Henry will finish a monumental painting and rise to prominence, a testament to her faith that his affection isn’t money-driven. But Henry turns out to be an alcoholic who cares more for drink and for crafting elaborate marionettes than for completing canvases. With funds dwindling and her family’s approval distant, Adelaide faces a harsh, isolating reality as she tries to navigate love, art, and propriety in a world that prizes status.

In the wake of a mounting strain, Henry reveals he never loved her, having romanced many wealthy female pupils and simply acquiesced to their marriage. In a heated quarrel, Henry grabs at Adelaide; she pushes him away, and the unsteady, drunken man fatally falls down a flight of stairs. The tragedy unleashes a web of fear and manipulation, as Mrs. Mounsey, Sybil Thorndike, a spiteful neighbor on Britannia Mews, witnesses the incident and begins to blackmail Adelaide. She claims Henry’s death was not an accident unless Adelaide keeps paying her regular sums, and she actively traps Adelaide in the street, even deceiving Adelaide’s mother about her whereabouts for years.

Enter Gilbert Lauderdale, a young barrister down on his luck, who bears a striking resemblance to Henry and quickly develops a genuine affection for Adelaide. Together they push back against Mrs. Mounsey’s threats, with Gilbert threatening legal action to expose her blackmail. However, Gilbert is already married to a wife who deserted him and moved to America, creating a complex obstacle in their path. Undaunted, the two begin living as Mr. and Mrs. Lambert in Adelaide’s flat, choosing to sleep in separate rooms to avoid temptation while they chart a hopeful future.

Drawing on the marionettes Henry left behind, they launch a puppet theatre that proves unexpectedly successful and begins to reshape Britannia Mews into a fashionable street, strengthening ties with Adelaide’s family and rekindling a sense of belonging. The return of Milly Lauderdale, [Mary Martlew], Gilbert’s former wife, complicates matters as she appears with a demand for compensation for “wronging” her by moving in with another woman. Yet Adelaide stands firm, insisting Gilbert’s fidelity, and Milly ultimately reveals that she divorced him years ago and married another man, freeing Gilbert to finally marry Adelaide and allowing the couple to dream of a future built on love, art, and a transformed street.
