What Happens in Forbidden: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Forbidden (1953) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Eddie Darrow [Tony Curtis] works for the American gangster Barney Pendleton [Alan Dexter] and is sent to Macao to locate the woman Christine Lawrence Manard [Joanne Dru] and bring her back to the United States. Pendleton stresses that Christine carries documents that could land him behind bars, and he orders his enforcer, Cliff Chalmer [Marvin Miller], to shadow Eddie on the mission.

In Macao’s neon-lit nights, Eddie saves the casino owner Justin Keit [Lyle Bettger] from an attack at a nightclub, and Justin, grateful, invites him into his world and introduces him to Christine. Eddie learns that Christine had once run off to marry a criminal named Manard, who is now dead. Christine explains she wed Manard because he threatened Eddie, and she hints that Pendleton wants her back precisely because she hides documents that could incriminate him.

To keep an eye on Eddie, Justin offers him a job at the casino, where Eddie befriends Allan Chung [Victor Sen Yung], a talented Asian pianist who keeps a wary eye on the casino’s dealings. A local gambler named Hon-Fai [Howard Chuman] is robbed and killed, and Eddie grows suspicious of Justin’s involvement. Christine makes it clear she does not love Justin, and the two share a passionate kiss that deepens the tension surrounding Eddie’s mission.

Chalmer makes his presence felt, watching Eddie and signaling that Eddie might plan to run off with Christine. Eddie denies any such plan, insisting he intends to follow Pendleton’s orders and bring Christine back to the States. Christine overhears this and, torn between loyalty and fear, ultimately decides to marry Justin.

As a gang war erupts, Chalmer is killed and Justin’s ruthless nature is revealed. Allan steps forward as an undercover lawman and helps Eddie and Christine board a boat bound for San Francisco. Justin pursues, but his efforts end in disaster when his boat explodes, removing the immediate threat and allowing Christine and Eddie to escape toward an uncertain future.
