The Deep Six

Set in September 1942, amid the heat of World War II, the story follows Susan Cahill, an art director at a Madison Avenue ad agency run by her fiancé, as she navigates love, ambition, and the looming call to duty. Susan becomes increasingly unsettled by her fiancé’s public flirtations with a client’s daughter meant to clinch a deal, a tension that threads through every interaction she has with him. When agency artist Alexander “Alec” Austen invites her to dinner on Long Island, the encounter stirs a careful curiosity in Susan, even though she also senses Alec’s earnest, undeniable attraction toward her. The dinner marks the beginning of a complicated bond, one that will pull them toward decisions neither of them is ready to face.

Before reporting for duty, Alec takes Susan home to meet his mother, a Quaker whose pacifist beliefs clash with the realities of war. Alec reveals his hope to marry Susan, and his mother Mrs. Austen listens with a mixture of warmth and sorrow, aware that his call to service may complicate their plans. Susan admits she loves Alec, but she is not prepared to break off her engagement, choosing instead to hold fast to her commitments as the world around them darkens.

Alec reports aboard the destroyer USS Poe at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where Cmdr. Warren Meredith Cmdr. Warren Meredith quickly befriends him. The ship’s doctor, Lt. Blanchard, grows to respect Alec, recognizing a deeper resolve behind his quiet manners. Yet the ship’s executive officer, Lt. Cmdr. Mike Edge, dislikes Alec from the start, casting a wary eye on his Quaker background and the implications it has for his suitability as assistant gunnery officer. In the gunnery division, Alec’s calm handling of a gambling-for-high-stakes moment earns him mixed respect, with Chief Petty Officer Frenchy Shapiro offering a hard-won friendship that bridges rank and experience.

The Poe sails with a grim efficiency, and when three survivors are pulled from a sunken German submarine, Alec and Blanchard strive to treat them humanely, even as Edge condemns what he views as weakness. Alec reassures his crew that it is possible to hold onto humanity in the heat of war, a belief that will be repeatedly tested as tensions mount and loyalties clash.

In San Francisco, Alec begins drawing a portrait of Frenchy Shapiro to give to his daughter, a gesture that underscores the growing bond between the two men. The captain grants Alec five days of liberty to visit Susan, who has come to California after Blanchard contacted her. The lovers decide to marry immediately and travel to Pebble Beach to stay with Susan’s sister, only to learn that her brother-in-law has just been killed in action. Alec resolves to return to the Poe and marry Susan later, once he survives his duty.

At sea in the Aleutian Islands, a tense moment arises when an approaching aircraft triggers a request for orders to open fire. Alec cannot bring himself to give the command, so the captain reshuffles his duties, swapping Alec’s post with that of the damage-control officer. Edge lashes out, and many on the Poe shun Alec for what they see as a cowardly failure to hate the enemy. Yet the hardship also lays bare a stubborn courage: when a Japanese plane finally threatens the ship, an unexploded bomb crashes through the deck, and with Frenchy Shapiro’s help, Alec hoists the dangerous device overboard rather than risk a catastrophic detonation. A funeral service later honors sailors killed in the attack and reminds the crew that they owe their lives to moments of bravery born of doubt and doubt transformed into action.

The danger does not end there. A later mission ashore aims to rescue stranded airmen and recover reconnaissance photographs of a Japanese-held island, a task that tests the crew’s nerve and resolve. The team links up with the airmen, but they are soon cut off by advancing Japanese soldiers. In the ensuing firefight, Frenchy is mortally wounded as Alec struggles to maintain control; he is forced to shoot four enemies to protect his remaining comrades, a moment that shatters any lingering doubts about his courage. Frenchy dies believing in his friend’s humanity, and Alec carries out the grim duty with a heavy heart.

Returning to Susan after the harrowing ordeal, Alec presents the completed portrait of Frenchy Shapiro to his daughter, a poignant reminder of a friend he could not save and a testament to the way war can force people to reconcile duty with compassion. The film closes on a note of quiet resilience: a man who once froze under pressure learns to act in the best traditions of honesty and courage, and a young couple who dared to dream of a future together finds a way forward in the shattered light of a nation at war.
