The Deal

The Confederation of Arab States is embroiled in a war with America, leading to a significant crisis as oil wells across the Arabian Peninsula have been set ablaze, preventing the extraction of crude oil from the region. Consequently, the United States faces skyrocketing gas prices and lengthy queues at gas stations. Amidst this turmoil, Tom Hanson (Christian Slater), a Wall Street analyst working for the firm Delaney & Strong, is thrust into a precarious situation when his colleague Richard is brutally murdered. Just days before his death, Richard confided in his client, Jared (Robert Loggia), the CEO of Condor, expressing his desire to resign due to overwhelming stress.

At the funeral, Jared approaches Tom with a proposal to finalize a lucrative deal that Richard had been working on, sparking Tom’s interest despite having no prior experience in this area. The deal, valued at an astounding $20 billion, involves an acquisition of the Russian oil company Black Star, and Tom is offered a handsome $25 million for his efforts in brokering the transaction. Compelled by the need to generate fees for his firm, Tom agrees to act as the investment banker for this high-stakes deal, even as he faces pressure at work from his superior, Hank (Colm Feore), who warns him that he will need to conduct a thorough evaluation of Black Star’s assets and provide a fairness opinion.

As Tom navigates this precarious situation, he finds himself growing closer to Abbey Gallagher (Selma Blair), a newly hired associate who has an ambitious vision for promoting alternative energy sources. Abbey, a Harvard graduate, has an innovative idea to package alternative energy tax credits into marketable securities to create a platform where investors can fund groundbreaking energy efforts. Although initially hesitant about the chaos of Wall Street, Tom persuades her to present her idea at Delaney & Strong, promising that the firm can help make her dreams a reality, thereby ensuring funds for burgeoning alternative energy projects.

Tom’s personal life is also complex; he is dating Anna (Angie Harmon), whom he met at a coffee shop just before diving into the convoluted world of Condor’s deal. Meanwhile, Abbey is faced with another associate, Shane Waller (Jim Thorburn), who harbors feelings for her. As Tom successfully pitches to package the alternate energy tax credits, he begins to engage in further due diligence concerning Black Star, which indicates a staggering estimate of 7 billion barrels of oil worth at only $3 per barrel. This figure, contrasted with the retail value of $30 per barrel, suggests that the Condor deal seems almost too advantageous to be true.

However, as Tom dives deeper, complications arise. He discovers discrepancies regarding the Black Star oil drilling plans and faces life-threatening encounters, including a violent attack one night. This all leads to a romantic turn with Abbey, but their burgeoning relationship is soon put to the test. As Tom grapples with growing tension regarding the deal, he learns that Anna is connected to Black Star’s operations and poses a direct threat to Abbey’s safety, demanding Tom produce a favorable report for the Condor board.

Amidst escalating pressure, Tom continues his revelation about the unethical operations of Black Star, leading him down a path filled with intrigue, deception, and danger. He faces hurdles at every corner, including threats to Abbey’s life and political manipulations surrounding the deal. Despite discovering alarming truths about the oil’s origins and the potential implications for national security, Tom bravely presses on, even with the looming risk of criminal implications on his involvement in the merger deal.

As the plot unfolds, Abbey manages to escape her captors, and Tom navigates the precarious board meeting approving the Condor merger. In a shocking turn of events, dark forces begin to eliminate anyone who might be a liability. Tom’s relentless pursuit of the truth and staunch commitment to Abbey culminate in a fierce confrontation, leading him to testify before an Ethics task-force, where he confesses to wrongdoing regarding the fairness opinion on the merger. Ultimately, he learns that the pressing need for oil overshadows ethical considerations, and the U.S. government turns a blind eye to the moral implications of the deal.

In this high-stakes narrative, Tom’s journey through corporate greed, personal sacrifice, and the fight for ethical conduct in a compromised system challenges him to confront not only the harsh realities of the market but also the costs of ambition and greed in times of crisis.
