In the quaint town of Centreville, police officers Chief Cliff Robertson and Officer Ronnie Petersen respond to an unusual call regarding a stolen chicken. The chicken's owner, Farmer Frank Miller, suspects their reclusive neighbor, Hermit Bob, might be the culprit, setting off a chain of strange events.

Upon confronting Hermit Bob at his remote dwelling, the officers are met with hostility when a warning shot forces them to retreat. Despite their unease, Cliff reassures Ronnie, reflecting on their past encounters with Bob and questioning the likelihood of his involvement in the theft.

As they drive away, Cliff and Ronnie notice an unusual brightness in the sky despite it being well past nightfall. Their conversation takes a surreal turn as they contemplate the eerie atmosphere while Officer Mindy Morrison struggles to reach them over the radio.

Meanwhile, at a local diner, Hank Thompson, Farmer Frank, and waitress Fern engage in a discussion about polar fracking. They express disbelief at the government’s reassurances, particularly under the strange circumstances of the lighting outside, adding to the town’s mounting tension.

As the day progresses, strange reports surface regarding pets acting erratically and disappearing without a trace. The unease escalates as Farmer Frank searches for his dog and a motel owner realizes his cat has gone missing, highlighting the bizarre happenings in Centreville.

In a vulnerable moment, Fern and her cleaning co-worker Lily discuss the new undertaker in town, Zelda Winston. Their unease deepens when they catch Zelda in an unexpected practice of katana techniques, which hints at the ominous events soon to unfold.
