Bertram Pincus, an introverted dentist residing in the bustling heart of New York City, leads a rather solitary existence, rarely engaging with others and often finding little good to say about the world around him. His life takes an unexpected turn when he begrudgingly agrees to undergo a routine colonoscopy at St. Victor’s Hospital, insistent on being placed under general anesthesia despite the medical team’s advice against it. Upon awakening and returning to the streets, Bertram is startled to discover that he has become a magnet for the deceased, with spirits shadowing his every move, all seeking his attention.

What Bertram quickly learns is that during the 7 minutes he spent under anesthesia, he experienced an event that changed his perception of life and death. He now possesses the uncanny ability to see and converse with a growing assembly of ghosts, each one tethered to their unfinished business on Earth. Their desperation leads them to choose Bertram as the ideal candidate to assist them in resolving their last requests, but he is initially reluctant to provide any help.

Among these spectral visitors is Frank, a former resident of Bertram’s building, who persists in pursuing Bertram to help his widow, Gwen, who is poised to remarry someone that Frank deeply detests. Frank passionately implores Bertram to intervene in order to prevent this unwanted union, promising that if Bertram complies, he and the other spirits will finally move on. Although initially resistant, Bertram finds himself imbued with a profound sense of responsibility and agrees to assist Frank in his quest.

As he spends more time with Gwen, Bertram discovers an unexpected connection with her. There’s a spark of camaraderie that evolves between them, even as she remains entangled with her boyfriend. The more Bertram attempts to court Gwen’s affections, the more he grapples with his own emotionally prickly nature, which often acts as a barrier to their potential relationship.

“Is there any way you can suppress your naturally prickly character?” is a question Bertram is forced to confront as he reckons with the possibility of winning over the lovely Gwen.

Their relationship grows increasingly complex, as Bertram realizes just how deeply he cares for her. However, his typical abrasive demeanor takes a toll on their budding friendship. Just as it seems that Bertram might remain forever on the outside of Gwen’s heart, a significant mishap occurs: during a dramatic moment, he finds himself hit by a bus, echoing the tragic fate that befell Frank.

Yet this time, the outcome is different; Bertram survives, and it seems as though fate has given him a second chance. With a newfound appreciation for life and a clearer understanding of his feelings for Gwen, he endeavors to amend his past missteps and forge a happier future together. Can he truly break free from his prickly exterior and finally allow himself the joy of love and companionship? The path to winning Gwen’s heart may hold both miraculous challenges and surprises, ultimately leading to a heartwarming conclusion.
