In 1968, a 13-year-old Thad Beaumont discovers his passion for writing. Encouraged by his mother, who gifts him a typewriter, Thad delves into crafting stories filled with violence, setting the stage for his future as a notable author.

As Thad immerses himself in his writing, he begins suffering from intense headaches and experiences eerie noises resembling screeching birds. These unsettling symptoms prompt concern and ultimately lead to a critical moment in his life.

While waiting for the school bus, Thad collapses and is rushed to the hospital. X-rays reveal a 'mass' in his brain, initially feared to be a tumor, but during surgery, doctors uncover a shocking truth: a long-lost twin embryo absorbed by Thad’s body.

Doctors successfully remove the long-dormant twin embryo from Thad's brain. This troubling event is accompanied by a bizarre and unsettling sight: thousands of birds swarm the hospital, echoing Thad's earlier experiences with strange noises.

Fast forward 23 years, Thad Beaumont has become a successful writer and academic, teaching writing classes at a local university. He lives a seemingly blissful life with his wife, Liz, and their infant twins, enjoying both family life and his literary career.

Thad’s peaceful existence shatters when a mysterious reporter named Fred Clawson approaches him. Fred knows Thad's hidden identity as 'George Stark,' a pseudonym used for his violent thrillers, and begins blackmailing him for monthly payments.

In a bid to rid himself of the blackmail, Thad decides to publicly reveal his pseudonym. He organizes a playful event where reporters watch him humorously bury the 'George Stark' identity at a local cemetery, hoping to put an end to the threats.

The situation takes a dark turn when the local gravedigger finds a gaping hole where Thad buried the 'Stark' identity. This unsettling discovery hints at a more sinister reality, as deaths begin to emerge around those who knew Thad's secret.

As brutal killings unfold, the first victim linked to Thad's alias is photographer Homer Gamache. He is violently murdered by a hitchhiker, leading local authorities to suspect Thad and heightening the tension surrounding his dual identity.

Thad is shaken when he learns of Fred Clawson’s murder, with a chilling note left behind that reads 'the sparrows are flying again.' This discovery indicates that his dark alter ego, George Stark, has emerged with a thirst for vengeance.

With Stark's murderous spree escalating, Thad's publicist, Miriam, becomes another victim of this brutal rampage. The pressure mounts as Thad feels trapped in a web of terror with Stark directly threatening his life and his family's safety.

Desperate to confront the terror inflicted by Stark, Thad seeks out a former doctor who treated his brain condition. However, Stark arrives first, brutally killing the doctor in a way that frames Thad as the prime suspect, further complicating his situation.

With law enforcement closing in, Stark kidnaps Thad's family, demanding that Thad return to writing novels as George Stark to appease his dark side. The stakes are raised as Thad races against time to save his loved ones from Stark’s violent grip.

Guided by an old professor, Thad learns that the only way to defeat Stark is to face him. Thad confronts Stark at a summer lake house, leading to a shocking showdown where Stark's grotesque appearance is revealed as he demands Thad to write for him.

In a clever turn of events, Thad tricks Stark into taking control of the writing, and as Stark loses his grip, the sparrows descend upon him. In a dramatic climax, the symbolic creatures consume Stark, liberating Thad and securing the safety of his family under the moonlit sky.
