Nick Chen trusts Wallace because of the explosive situation in Chinatown that forces them to work together. When the catastrophic explosion rocks Chinatown, Chen is desperate to maintain peace between the Tung Fung Benevolent Association and the Fukienese Dragons. Wallace presents himself as a partner looking to expedite his career within the Asian Gang Unit, and Chen has no reason to suspect otherwise since Wallace's Internal Affairs background is hidden from him.

Earlier, Chen's history of working with informants like Uncle Benny shows he often operates in morally gray areas, making him willing to trust unconventional allies.

Danny Wallace is actually an Internal Affairs detective assigned to investigate Nick Chen, not a regular Asian Gang Unit detective as he pretends. He misleadingly claims his involvement with Chen is purely to help his career advancement, while his secret agenda is to gather evidence of Chen's corruption for Internal Affairs.

Lieutenant Henry Lee secretly forms an alliance with Bobby Vu, the leader of the Tung Fung tong, despite being a police officer. Both Lee and Vu are aware of an undercover FBI agent operating within their drug enterprise, and they work together to protect their respective interests while eliminating the FBI threat. Lee's betrayal stems from his corruption and willingness to collaborate with the criminal underworld for personal gain.

Lee's initial positioning allows him to operate behind the scenes while maintaining his authority within the police department.

Bobby Vu, the leader of the Tung Fung tong, cold-bloodedly murders Uncle Benny Wong. One of Chen's informants witnesses Vu commit this killing, which becomes a critical turning point that leads Chen to inform the District Attorney about the Tongs' criminal activities.

Nick Chen dies saving Danny Wallace from Bobby Vu's gunfire during the climactic confrontation at the sting operation. When Vu opens fire, Chen pushes Wallace out of the line of fire but is fatally shot in the process. Nick Chen decides to inform the District Attorney after one of his informants witnesses Bobby Vu brutally murder Uncle Benny.
