The Captain’s Paradise

On the ship, the elderly Lawrence St. James learns from first mate Carlos Ricco that Henry is dead and seeks an explanation. He begs Ricco to tell the truth about what happened. The revelation inserts a mystery that will be unpacked through flashbacks.

In a flashback, Henry leads a double life with Nita, a tempestuous younger lover. He treats her to glamorous nights at restaurants and clubs, living a wild, carefree existence. The Moroccan idyll contrasts sharply with his other life and foreshadows the costs of deception.

Back in Gibraltar, Henry maintains a sober, married life with Maud, his devoted wife. He buys her a vacuum cleaner and keeps their home orderly, preserving a respectable image for those on land. The two lives run in parallel, held apart by secrecy.
