Alan Ladd stars as John, a talented blacksmith and swordsmith trained at Camelot. As a commoner he cannot hope to win Lady Linet, the Earl of Yeoniland’s daughter, so he assumes the hidden identity of the Black Knight. In that guise he helps King Arthur thwart Saracens and Cornish men disguised as Vikings who plan to seize the kingdom.

Castle attack and memory loss

The Earl of Yeonil's castle is attacked by Saracens and Cornishmen disguised as Vikings. His wife is killed in the assault and he loses his memory in the ensuing chaos. The attackers are revealed to be part of a scheme by Palamides and King Mark to undermine Arthur and Christianity.

Arthur's foes revealed

Palamides, a knight of the Round Table, secretly plots with the pagan Cornish King Mark to overthrow Arthur. They pretend to be allies while pursuing their own agenda. The danger to Camelot becomes clear.

John accuses Palamides' servant Bernard of murder in front of Arthur. Arthur grants him three months to prove the accusation or face execution himself. The challenge forces John to prove his case and uncover the truth behind the conspiracy.

Sir Ontzlake sees potential in John and takes him under his wing. He trains him in swordplay so that John can adopt the secret identity of the wandering Black Knight. This new persona will be central to challenging Palamides and Mark.

A raid by 'Vikings' targets a newly founded monastery, taking Lady Linet and the monks to Stonehenge for a pagan sacrifice. The raid demonstrates the collaboration between Palamides and Mark against Arthur's realm. John, as the Black Knight, begins to intervene.

Black Knight saves Linet

The Black Knight arrives at the ritual location and saves Lady Linet from the pagan threat. Arthur and his knights join the battle and defeat the pagans, culminating in the destruction of Stonehenge.

Palamides tricks Linet into his castle, hoping she will reveal the Black Knight's identity. John learns of the plan and races to protect her, continuing to operate in disguise.
