Three police officers—Detectives Poley, Frizer, and Skeres—are engaged in an intense interrogation of Ned Cruz, a private investigator from Los Angeles, portrayed by Antonio Banderas. As they delve into Ned’s past, a series of flashbacks reveals a sinister connection to a mobster named Skinny Faddeev, who had once orchestrated a deadly scheme involving $30 million in blood diamonds. Five years prior, this plot involved a boxer named Anton, played by Robert Maillet, who was manipulated into deliberately losing a fight against his own nephew—a match that tragically ended with the nephew’s death at Anton’s hands. This horrifying incident led Anton to a life sentence in prison, and the discovery of Skinny’s body only further complicated the web of deceit.
While behind bars, Anton begins receiving mysterious letters from a woman named Lexie Persimmon, a fact that stirs hope within him. Five years later, after a daring escape from prison, Anton is fiercely determined to uncover Lexie’s whereabouts and enlists the help of Ned, although Ned is initially doubtful about the assignment, especially since he has no photo of Lexie to guide him.
As Ned embarks on his investigation, a string of suspicious deaths unfolds. His first lead points him to actor Adam Nova, portrayed by James Van Der Beek, who is under Ned’s scrutiny due to a scandal involving his private life. However, this inquiry takes a dark turn when Nova’s house tragically explodes, taking him with it. Next, he meets Zooey Wigner, played by Rebecca Mader, a hospital patient struggling with drug withdrawal who provides more insight into Lexie. However, the next day, Zooey is discovered dead in her apartment, an apparent victim of drowning.
Ned’s investigation leads him to a porn producer named Puss, who shares information about the working women in his circle, yet just like the others, he meets a grim fate the very next day, succumbing to a fatal injury. As tensions mount, Ned notices a black Lincoln tailing him, which he suspects belongs to the Russian Mafia. Following a clue from a discarded letter, he makes his way to San Celeritas, New Mexico, believing this could be where Lexie is hiding.
In New Mexico, Ned encounters Fay Neman, a tattooed waitress and particle physics enthusiast, who becomes an unexpected ally. Fay’s flirtation with Ned leads to a series of shared moments within his motel room, where they explore both the complexities of their lives and the ambition of scientific inquiry.
As the investigation unfolds, Ned comes across the enigmatic Simon, played by Sam Elliott, alongside his wife Julie and physicist Niels Geck, characterized by Jimmi Simpson. Feeling drawn to Julie, Ned begins to speculate she may be Lexie, which introduces an unexpected twist to the story. However, when gunfire erupts, he quickly realizes the danger they are all in, including Julie, who he believes may be caught in a deadly crossfire.
After a climactic series of confrontations and revelations, it becomes clear that Niels, dressed in women’s clothing, has played a pivotal role in the correspondence with Anton. With lives at stake, a chaotic shootout ensues, leading to Niels and Anton’s fateful end. As tensions reach their peak, the detectives, who have been monitoring their every move, take Ned and Julie hostage in a desperate bid to extricate information.
Ned, amidst the chaos, cleverly pieces together the puzzle of the blood diamonds’ location. However, as danger looms, the situation escalates into a showdown where betrayal and survival instincts come to the fore. In an explosive conclusion, with Ned and Julie narrowly escaping their captors, they drive towards freedom, picking up Fay, who has been an unassuming ally throughout the perilous events.
“When all things are equal, the simplest solution is the best.”
The intertwining destinies of these characters remind us that in the darkness of corruption and despair, empathy and connection can illuminate the path to resolution, even amid chaos and confusion.

They combine the suspense and action of a crime story with thought-provoking scientific, philosophical, or metaphysical concepts for a uniquely cerebral experience.
The narrative pattern involves a standard crime plot—a heist, a murder, a conspiracy—that is juxtaposed with or driven by a larger, abstract concept. This could be a scientific theory, a philosophical dilemma, or a metaphysical question. The characters are often caught between the immediate, physical dangers of their situation and the mind-expanding implications of the bigger idea.
