He is eventually found half out of the lab’s moon pool, and when his mask is removed, it becomes clear that he has transformed into a grotesque, gelatinous mass. The mass is moved into the lab and revealed to be chemically identical to the unknown substance Claire has been studying, while simultaneously mutating into a full-fledged, man-sized stingray-like creature.
