Still wondering what the ending of The Flood (2023) really means? Here’s a spoiler-heavy breakdown of the final scene, major twists, and the deeper themes that shape the film’s conclusion.
In the chaos caused by Hurricane Katrina, floodwaters flooded Sheriff Jo Newmann’s office, turning it into a dangerous battleground filled with man-eating alligators. When criminals are transferred to her station and their plan to free one of their own, Cody, is set into motion, the flood and the gators become an unstoppable force of destruction. The alligators, swept into the town by the hurricane, invade the office through ventilation ducts and flood the basement, acting as relentless predators. Jo and the remaining criminals try to escape amid the rising water and chaos, with the gators killing several of Rafe’s crew and destroying their plans. Meanwhile, Cody reveals he was a military man who fell from grace and was coerced into working for Rafe, only to be wrongfully accused of murder after Rafe kills a police officer.
As Rafe tries to escape with Cody and the stolen money, he turns against Cody, revealing his true intentions to leave Jo behind and take the cash for himself. Rafe, who had survived an explosion caused by Jo, is killed in the blast while Rafe’s schemes come to an end. In the final moments, Jo and Cody manage to escape on a jet ski, with Jo planning to cover up Cody’s innocence by declaring him dead in custody—believing he was not the killer. They part ways, with Cody smiling wryly when asked about the stolen cash, which hints that he might have kept or used some of it. The ending leaves a sense of tentative hope: Jo is alive, Cody may have a second chance, and the threat of the gators is finally over, but it also keeps a shadow of uncertainty, especially around the stolen money and their futures.
