The Battle at Lake Changjin II: Water Gate Bridge

Wu Qianli, Wu Jing, commander of the People’s Liberation Army’s 7th Company, returns home after the Chinese Civil War. He tells his family that his brother, Wu Baili, was killed in action. Having been allotted land for his service, he promises his parents he will build them a house, but his leave is cancelled when China enters the Korean War. Qianli’s younger brother, Wanli, asks to go with, but is refused.

The film then moves forward to the heat and smoke of war, starting with the 15 September 1950 bombardments that accompany the Battle of Incheon, where U.S. aircraft rain down on a village in Andong Province. A jump ahead to 4 October 1950 lands in Beijing, where the Politburo in Zhongnanhai debates the strategic stakes of the conflict. Mao Zedong poses a piercing question about the possibility of crossing the 38th parallel toward the Yalu, while a military briefer argues that simply stationing forces in Taiwan has already marked the United States as a threat to China. The atmosphere is tense, and the leadership weighs the risks of escalation as the war spills across borders.

To Qianli’s horror, Wanli has enlisted and is now stationed in the same 7th Company. The new recruit faces bullying from fellow soldiers as the unit travels toward the front, and Qianli initially refuses to even hand him a rifle. A bombing disrupts the train, forcing the company to press on on foot while dodging hostile air. They stumble into a clash where Wanli and Qianli strike back at four Americans in hand-to-hand combat and narrowly avoid a tank. The company presses forward to the front lines, where they are entrusted with delivering field radios to troops in need. The mission continues, and the men press on through bitter cold and shrinking supplies, briefly recharging in a moment of rest where Mao Zedong’s son Anying, serving under the alias “Liu,” helps distribute clothing before the next push drives them onward.

The bleak conditions deepen as the soldiers endure high elevations and subzero temperatures while American troops celebrate Thanksgiving in relative comfort, already planning for Christmas. Anying makes a risky return to a base to retrieve a map and is killed in a bombing raid—a stark reminder of how close danger sits to every decision on the ground.

The 27 November offensive marks a turning point as Chinese forces assault the U.S. Army’s 31st Infantry Regiment at Sinhung-ni. The retreat begins, and Qianli shoots the U.S. commander, Colonel Allan MacLean, before pulling back and preventing Wanli from carrying out vengeance. Reinforcements sweep toward Hagaru-ri, even as a U.S. Marine Corsair strafes the area and is downed by a Chinese soldier wielding a bazooka. Lei Suisheng, who takes the smoke marker from the jeep and slips away to join the retreat, is killed when U.S. bombers hammer the retreating column.

The narrative then shifts to Hill 1071, where the 3rd Company of the 3rd Division, 58th Corps holds out against the advancing Americans. Yang Gensi, the last surviving member of his unit, makes a heroic, fatal move by attacking American tanks with a satchel charge. A disturbing sight follows as a retreating U.S. Marine column discovers Chinese soldiers frozen at their posts; General Oliver P. Smith salutes the fallen comrades, and his voiceover notes the stubborn determination of their defense, suggesting that the United States was not destined to prevail against such resolute opposition.

As the war draws toward its next phase, the closing scenes depict a mass grave at Hungnam and the city burning during the Hungnam evacuation. Captions recount that 105,000 U.S. troops were evacuated by 24 December and that the 9th Corps succeeded in capturing Hungnam. The film emphasizes the broader significance of the Lake Changjin campaign, presenting it as a decisive example of how Chinese forces disrupted a reinforced U.S. regiment and halted MacArthur’s “presumptuous” plan to end the war by Christmas. The narration frames these events as a catalyst for the eventual victory in the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, even as it acknowledges the immense cost born by Chinese soldiers—more than 197,000 lives lost.

Across the film, a wide cast threads through the human cost and the strategic calculus of a war that tested families, soldiers, and nations alike. The story intertwines intimate moments of kinship and duty with sweeping scenes of battlefield endurance, underscoring how individual choices and collective sacrifice shape a nation’s memory of a hard-fought conflict.
