The Babymaker: The Dr. Cecil Jacobson Story

The movie begins in 1985, introducing viewers to Dr. Cecil Jacobson, played by George Dzundza, a highly regarded reproductive specialist who operates his own genetic fertility clinic. Known affectionately as ‘The Babymaker’, he has gained widespread respect among his colleagues. However, beneath his professional facade, he harbors a dark secret: he secretly uses his own sperm to impregnate his patients without their knowledge or consent.

One of his patients is Mary Bennett, portrayed by Melissa Gilbert, a woman who is desperately trying to have a child but faces the heartbreaking obstacle of her husband, Greg Bennett, played by Tom Verica, having undergone a vasectomy. Mary is advised to consider artificial insemination, and her close friend Nita, played by Shannon Lawson, who also underwent similar procedures, encourages her to proceed. Although Greg shows reluctance and struggles to accept the idea of using an anonymous donor, Mary convinces him that this might be their only chance at parenthood. Despite Greg’s reservations, and his discomfort with the fact that the donor’s identity remains a mystery, Mary persists with the plan.

When it comes time for insemination, Dr. Jacobson secretly uses his own sperm samples, an act hidden from both Mary and Greg. Mary’s maternal instincts grow stronger as she hopes for a positive outcome, but her trust in the doctor begins to be tested as strange things start happening. During this period, her friend Sue Castellano, played by Shanna Reed, believes she is pregnant at thirteen weeks, only to discover she is actually not. Despite his reassurances and showing her an ultrasound image of what appears to be a fetus, Dr. Jacobson dismisses her concerns. Later, Sue contacts a second doctor, who reveals there was no pregnancy—only fecal matter mistaken for a fetus—highlighting several false-positive test cases linked to Jacobson’s clinic.

Sue, suspecting deception, confronts Dr. Jacobson, but he deflects blame, claiming equipment issues caused the inaccuracies. He insists there was indeed fetal tissue in Sue’s body, confirming she was pregnant, which strains her trust even more. She warns Mary about the potential fraud, but Mary, now pregnant herself, chooses to dismiss the warnings, convinced of her pregnancy.

As time passes, Mary gives birth to a healthy boy, Jesse, who exhibits some physical similarities to Dr. Jacobson. Five years later, accusations surface about Jacobson manipulating patients’ pregnancy tests, and a legal trial begins. Mary, convinced that the allegations are false and driven by her own suspicions, focuses on whether Jacobson used his own sperm for inseminations. She starts to notice uncanny resemblances between her son Jesse and the doctor, fueling her resolve to uncover the truth.

Greg urges her to let it go, fearing the impact on their son and warning her not to testify against Jacobson. Nevertheless, Mary, fueled by her desire for justice, decides to go to court in disguise, with Sue helping her. During her emotional testimony, Jacobson eventually admits to the accusations but claims he did it for health reasons. Nonetheless, he is found guilty on multiple charges, including fraud and perjury.

In the movie’s closing scenes, Mary and Greg reconcile, and Sue announces she is pregnant. The film concludes with the grim update that Dr. Cecil Jacobson was sentenced to five years in prison but was later released on bail pending appeal, after being convicted of 46 counts of fraud and 6 counts of perjury. Additionally, it is revealed that Sue successfully gave birth to a healthy boy, bringing a glimpse of hope amidst the story’s darker themes.

The film underscores the importance of ethics in medicine and the devastating impact that deception and greed can have on innocent lives, exploring complex questions about trust, parenthood, and the moral boundaries of scientific practice.
