Jason, Cleo Arden, and the eager Mousey travel to Fernville after rumors that Valentine retired and left his hat in this quiet town. They set up shop around the town and brace for leads amid curiosity from the locals.

The group starts in the town's local newspaper office, hoping old files hold clues to Valentine’s whereabouts. Jason hopes to uncover forgotten records that could reveal Valentine's path. The quiet town becomes a canvas for a public inquiry.

Bonnie Forbes, editor Tom Forbes's daughter, shows romantic interest in Jason and volunteers to help. She takes the team to meet her father, hoping to coax out information about Valentine.

Bonnie leads the team to Pinky, Tom's gardener, who has heard Valentine stories in the past. Pinky claims to know nothing concrete, but the connection hints a deeper history.

Jason and Mousey search Tom's office; Pinky rummages and destroys old files, and a photo of Pinky as a younger man with hair resembling Valentine's sidekick surfaces. The discovery deepens the mystery and hints at a hidden identity.

Mousey, the mobster's son seeking revenge, confronts Pinky and kills him to avenge his father. This violent act intensifies Jason’s suspicions and escalates the danger around Valentine.

Following Pinky's death, Jason travels around Fernville collecting fingerprints of prominent townspeople, stirring up suspicion among ex-convicts who now live quietly there. He theorizes that Valentine might still be in town and can be exposed by the prints.

The town's sheriff's office stores the critical fingerprints in a safe, and Jason plans to ambush Valentine when he attempts to crack the safe to recover the prints. The plan sets the stage for a tense confrontation.

In a climactic moment, Jason interrupts as Tom Forbes—revealed to be Jimmy Valentine—breaks the safe. Tom offers to exchange his own prints to save the rest of the town from exposure, hoping to protect others.

Mousey advances on Tom/Jimmy, but the confrontation reveals Pinky, not Tom, was the true Valentine in disguise. Jason explains this twist to the police, absolving Tom and his daughter from ruin. The revelation reframes the town's understanding of the 'hero' and the 'victim'.
