Retired schoolteacher Mrs. Hoyle, Spring Byington renowned for reforming wayward youths, has spent 25 years living in a fading hotel that falls under new ownership when gang leader Morganti, Anthony Caruso, buys the place. Morganti sets out to tighten control by evicting many residents, but Mrs. Hoyle pleads for mercy and persuades him to let her stay along with dancehall girl Angela Brown, Tanis Chandler. This fragile accommodation becomes the seed of a complicated bond between a reform-minded matriarch and a gangster who claims he wants to redeem his crew.

Eddie Slattery, Brett King one of Morganti’s men, falls for Angela and, in a startling twist, discovers that Mrs. Hoyle is his long-lost mother. He keeps this knowledge to himself, while Mrs. Hoyle doesn’t recognize Eddie at all—she believes her husband James left years ago as a traveling salesman, taking their young son with him.

At first, Morganti’s gang resists the idea of change, but Mrs. Hoyle’s quiet influence slowly nudges the men away from their criminal lives. Most abandon their old ways, except for Harry Rogan, Robert Karnes, who remains stubbornly wedded to crime. Defying Morganti’s orders, Rogan schemes to pull off a grocery-store robbery on the same night as the hotel restaurant’s grand opening and tries to recruit Eddie to help. Eddie feels bound to Rogan because Rogan once saved his life during a prior holdup, so he reluctantly participates.

After the heist, Eddie wants nothing to do with the stolen money, and he refuses to reveal where it’s hidden—a fur coat hanging in Mrs. Hoyle’s closet. The night watchman from the grocery store, along with the store’s own security, identifies Rogan, and detective Pat Dennison, Tris Coffin, mounts a case against Morganti for orchestrating the robbery. When Eddie spots the watchman with Dennison, he and Rogan try to run. Rogan is shot and killed, and Eddie is knocked unconscious. Mrs. Hoyle is arrested when investigators discover the ill-gotten money and jewelry in her room. She denies any involvement and claims the jewels were inexpensive trinkets from her husband, while Morganti pays her bail. Yet Dennison and the prosecution remain convinced she’s connected, and the case goes to trial.

The trial opens while Eddie remains in a coma. During Hoyle’s testimony, the prosecuting attorney, James Flavin, confronts her with the fact that she owns valuable jewels and reveals that her husband was a convicted jewel thief who died in prison. Shattered, Mrs. Hoyle struggles to process the revelation and the judge orders a recess. When Eddie regains consciousness, he begs Dennison and Morganti to take him to court so he can testify. In a dramatic turn, he confesses to the crime and, in the process, reveals that he is Mrs. Hoyle’s son. The charges against Mrs. Hoyle are dismissed, but Eddie faces several years in prison. The film ends with a poignant reconciliation: Mrs. Hoyle is reunited with her son, and she reassures him that after prison he can start a new life.
