Mangal, Dev Anand, is a taxi driver whose friends nickname him "Hero" for his selfless habits. By day he ferries passengers through the city, and by night he listens to Sylvie, the seductive club dancer who has feelings for him, Sheila Ramani. One day, while helping another taxi driver, Mangal comes to the aid of Mala, a woman who is being molested by two thugs, and Kalpana Kartik brings Mala's courage to life. He guides her toward her destination, only to learn that the person she is seeking is Ratanlal, a music director Ratan Gaurang who has moved out. The next day, Mala and Mangal resume their quest for Ratanlal, but their search proves fruitless, leaving them with little progress and plenty of hope. Mala ends up staying in Mangal's tiny apartment, and the pair slowly grows closer, their budding attraction tempered by Mala’s knowledge of Sylvie’s presence in Mangal’s life. When Mala discovers Sylvie, she decides to leave, and Mangal sets off to find Sylvie, though she remains elusive. Meanwhile, Ratanlal hires Mangal's taxi to travel somewhere, and circumstances bring Mala back into Mangal's orbit. He eventually takes Mala to Ratanlal's place, where she is welcomed, and with the help of her music director friend, she rises to become a famous singer. The film closes with a lingering question: will Mangal find the courage to tell Mala how he feels, and how will Sylvie react to the evolving love triangle?
