Gennosuke is a restless rebel, a samurai who has fled his clan after killing a trusted counselor, and the act pulls a tightening net around him as rival swordsmen close in. A pursuing party — led by the counselor’s daughter, Misa, and her fiancé, Daizaburo — press him at every turn, despite his obvious skill and superiority with the blade. A series of stark flashbacks reveals that Gennosuke was maneuvered into treason by a higher-ranking samurai who promised him reform and a brighter rank in return for the murder. The mood thickens when it’s revealed that Jurota’s own clan intends to betray him and his wife once the loot is secured. Witnessing this betrayal resonates deeply with Gennosuke, who recalls his own brutal entanglement with the clan’s higher powers, and it steels his resolve to help rather than walk away.
