FBI Agent Thomas Mackelway finds himself in a precarious situation after being placed on a six-month leave, demoted, and transferred to Albuquerque. His downfall began when he violated the civil rights of a notorious serial killer, Raymond Starkey. At that time, Starkey was hiding out in Mexico, but Mackelway’s brazen decision to transport him back to the States in the trunk of his car led to Starkey’s eventual release into society.
Upon arriving in Albuquerque, Mackelway’s first assignment involves the mysterious murder of a traveling salesman named Harold Speck, whose lifeless body bears a peculiar “zero mark.” This grim discovery prompts the FBI to get involved, given that the body is located just across the state line. As Mackelway delves deeper into the investigation, he uncovers two additional murders, with Raymond Starkey being the third victim. Each corpse shares the same unsettling zero mark, sparking a troubling pattern.
Initially, the killings appear random, but Mackelway’s investigative instincts kick in, leading him to connect the dots. It soon becomes apparent that someone is systematically targeting serial killers and eliminating them. His investigation takes a pivotal turn when he comes across a potential lead: Benjamin O’Ryan. As Mackelway begins to track O’Ryan, he discovers that O’Ryan is not just another suspect; he was once an FBI agent with specialized training in ‘remote viewing,’ allowing him to see events through the eyes of the perpetrators.
This shocking revelation unravels a web of deceit and danger, compelling Mackelway to navigate through a world where morality blurs and justice takes on a violent form. As he inches closer to the truth, the stakes rise and the tension mounts in a gripping tale of crime and the pursuit of justice.
