In Rome, Priest, Ron O’Neal and Georgia, Sheila Frazier, have left New York City behind to seek a quieter life. Priest’s days slip into a routine of poker games with Italian businessmen, a steady drift of tedium that somehow keeps him moving. During one game, Dr. Lamine Sonko Roscoe Lee Browne arrives with harrowing stories of Umbria’s destruction and a desire to talk to Priest, though the younger man brushes him off, unsure whether to trust the stranger or the pull of his own apathy.

That evening, a dinner with Georgia and Jordan Gaines Robert Guillaume and his girlfriend Lisa ends with Jordan’s singing, which annoys Priest and unsettles the fragile peace he’s trying to maintain. Georgia opens up about wanting children and a family, a dream Priest hesitates to share, revealing a growing rift between them as he clings to a wary independence. The morning after, Jordan and Priest reconnect, trading memories of their New York days, with Priest hinting at a shadowy past that included drug dealing.

A horse riding lesson brings Priests face-to-face with Sonko once more, and an assassin suddenly interrupts, only to be overwhelmed by Sonko’s quiet efficiency. The two men retreat to Priest’s place, where a frank discussion about Umbria shifts the mood from suspicion to a reluctant kinship; Priest refuses to help at first, but the seeds of a conscience awaken as he listens to Sonko’s painful history. Afterwards, Priest decides to go to Umbria, a journey that pulls him away from Rome and tests the bonds at home. He returns soon after with a renewed sense of purpose and a willingness to stand beside Sonko, recognizing that the doctor’s cause is tied to a broader fight. In a casino, Priest strikes up a conversation with Matty Smith Jacques Sernas, seeking assistance to obtain weapons, and Matty agrees—an alliance that promises action, not just talk.

The next morning, Priest says goodbye to Georgia and to Sonko before boarding a plane toward the volatile mission ahead. Upon landing, betrayal cuts deep as soldiers seize him, beat him, and lock him away in a stark cell, the kind of humiliation that tests faith and nerve. The commander calls Sonko, and Priest overhears the grim news that the doctor may have to accept defeat in the face of force, a moment that steels Priest’s resolve. A guard checks on him, only to fall to Priest’s improvised defense, and another soon meets a similar fate, leaving the truth of their power struggle stark and brutal.

Emerging into daylight, Priest finds himself in the middle of a circle of Africans, a surreal moment that underscores the gravity of his journey. He eventually returns from Umbria, reuniting with Georgia in a resolve tempered by what he has seen and endured, a testament to a man who reconsiders his path and the costs of stepping into history.
