Al Connors Loye Hawkins is a groovy, streetwise private investigator who left Harlem for Miami, where his reputation for being a sharp, capable problem-solver makes him highly acclaimed and constantly in demand.
The CIA taps him for a mission of international importance: the African head of state is in town for a conference, and the potentate’s wife, Mrs. Ashanti Patricia Fulton, will need constant and reliable security. To minimize risk of leaks, the agency arranges for her to check into a local hotel posing as Al’s wife. Al takes the case and soon finds himself drawn to Mrs. Ashanti, a developing romance that adds pressure to the undercover assignment. He also must fend off spies who pose as hotel staff, forcing him into confrontations with Ashanti’s enemies. In a crucial realization, he discovers the danger is tied to a crime lord known as Big Daddy Scott Lawrence. Deciding the hotel stay is too risky, he moves Mrs. Ashanti to the apartment of a female friend, but then—after dismissing that friend as a precaution—he impulsively ends up sharing a night with Mrs. Ashanti.
With the CIA operation concluded, Al returns to his office only to be handed a far more personal and dangerous case. Harry De Bauld’s Steve Gallon daughter Wanda has been kidnapped by the very same Big Daddy who threatened Mrs. Ashanti, and Harry is willing to pay handsomely for her safe return. He supplies cash and cocaine for a potential hostage exchange, and Al dives deep into Miami’s underworld—cruising gyms, health clubs, and shadowy corners where ragged foes in leisure suits direct him toward a shack on the city’s outskirts. There, Al battles Big Daddy’s men, rescues Wanda Cathy Davis, and once again shelters her at the apartment of his female friend, where Wanda is kept safe—and where Al and Wanda’s interaction takes another intimate turn.
Wanda is eventually reunited with her father, but Al is not satisfied; he wants to put an end to Big Daddy once and for all. He arranges a direct confrontation with the crime boss, who proposes a fight to the death on the condition that the loser’s allies will not retaliate. Wanda returns to cheer him on as the two sides square off, and after a tense, prolonged grappling sequence, Al delivers the fatal blow, killing Big Daddy. Al departs with Wanda as his men celebrate with high fives, leaving the Miami night to echo with the echoes of a hard-fought victory and a hard-won, if morally complex, takeaway.
