Read the complete plot breakdown of Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay (2018), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Three years earlier, Amanda Waller Vanessa Williams dispatches Task Force X, a black ops squad of criminals with nanite bombs in their heads, to recover a leaked hard drive from Tobias Whale Dave Fennoy. After the mission succeeds, Count Vertigo [Jim Pirri] and Jewelee [Julie Nathanson] betray the team to steal the drive for themselves. Having overheard their treachery through the squad’s comms, Waller uses Vertigo’s bomb to kill him, while Deadshot Christian Slater ends Jewelee’s life to spare her the same fate.

In the present, Waller is diagnosed with a terminal illness but learns of the Get Out of Hell Free card, a powerful relic said to grant the owner access to heaven after death regardless of sins. The card is in the possession of a former Doctor Fate, Steel Maxum Greg Grunberg, and Waller assembles Deadshot, Harley Quinn Tara Strong, Captain Boomerang Liam McIntyre, Killer Frost Kristin Bauer, Copperhead Gideon Emery, and Bronze Tiger Billy Brown to retrieve it.

The squad tracks Maxum to a strip club, but they are confronted by Professor Zoom C. Thomas Howell as Zoom, Silver Banshee Julie Nathanson, and Blockbuster Dave Fennoy, who also seek the card. Despite heavy resistance, the team uses Zoom’s waning powers to escape with Maxum, only to learn that Scandal Savage Dania Ramirez and Knockout Cissy Jones have already stolen the card on Vandal Savage’s behalf and abandoned him.

The squad reaches Scandal and Knockout’s apartment, but they are intercepted by Vandal Savage Jim Pirri and his men, who seize the card and grievously injure Knockout. As they flee, Zoom secretly plants a tracker on Vandal Savage’s airship. Deadshot then breaks off to see his daughter Zoe, but Bronze Tiger [Billy Brown] keeps him focused on the mission. After kidnapping Killer Frost, removing her bomb, and convincing her to join them, Zoom’s group uses her to lure the squad into a trap, wounding Bronze Tiger. They drop him at a hospital before Scandal calls to reveal Vandal Savage’s location as revenge for Knockout’s injuries.

The squad finally locates Vandal Savage, learning that he tasked Professor Pyg [James Urbaniak] with implanting the card in him so that any attempt to remove it would exhaust its magic. Zoom’s group arrives and subdues everyone present. Deadshot questions his fading powers, and Zoom reveals that he was shot by another timeline’s Batman but drew energy from the Speed Force to slow down his own death, which limits the use of his abilities.

Zoom uses his phasing to remove the card from Vandal Savage without triggering its magic, killing Vandal Savage in the process. Killer Frost [Kristin Bauer] then kills Silver Banshee [Julie Nathanson] and Blockbuster [Dave Fennoy] to seize the card for herself, but Copperhead [Gideon Emery] fights her until Waller detonates his bomb, killing them both.

Captain Boomerang betrays the squad for the card, but Bronze Tiger arrives to stop him. Zoom incapacitates Boomerang and fatally wounds Bronze Tiger, who retaliates by injuring Zoom, allowing Deadshot to execute him and send him back to his original death. In the end, Deadshot hands the card to Bronze Tiger before his own death, and, after Tiger’s passing, the powerless card is given to Waller. Having served his time, Deadshot visits Zoe, underscoring the personal costs of the mission.
