Sufiyum Sujatayum

Sujatha, a mute Kathak dancer, meets Sufi on a bus. He loses his misbaha, which Sujatha returns to him, earning his gratitude. The moment blossoms into love and they decide to elope.

Sujatha and Sufi fall in love and plan to elope. But Sujatha's father Mallikarjunan threatens suicide to stop the match. The looming family pressure pushes the couple toward heartbreak.

A decade passes and Sujatha is married to a Dubai-based NRI doctor, V. R. Rajeev, and they have a daughter. She feels that the romance of her youth is behind her. The glamorous Dubai life contrasts with the village memories.

Sufi returns to the village after ten years and visits Ustad's grave in the mosque cemetery, discovering that Ustad is no longer alive. The visit reconnects him with the village and the memories of his past life.

In the mosque, the Imam finds Sufi and invites him inside. Sufi delivers the call to prayer and gathers the crowd, but he collapses and dies during the prayer. His death shakes the village and leaves Sujatha heartbroken.

Devastated by Sufi's death, Sujatha's life seems adrift, and Rajeev decides to bring her to the funeral to help her say goodbye. He hopes the burial will heal some of the distance between them. The gesture reveals his growing longing to reconnect with Sujatha.

The funeral proceeds with Sufi laid to rest at the mosque cemetery. Rajeev pays his respects while Sujatha remains outside because females aren't allowed inside the burial area. The scene highlights social customs that complicate their farewell.

That evening, Rajeev discovers his passport is missing and fears it may have fallen into the grave. He and the others search frantically, intensifying the emotional strain of the night. The disappearance becomes a key plot point tying the characters together.

Mallikarjunan, Rajeev, and their tenant Kumaran decide to unearth Sufi’s grave to recover the passport. The trio clashes and bickers as they comb the site, each driven by love, pride, and urgency. The confrontation threatens to fracture their fragile ties.

Sujatha appears at the grave with the passport she had hidden to ensure the misbaha would be returned when the grave was opened. Her timing alters the course of the night and reaffirms her ongoing bond with Sufi. The group now faces a decision about what comes next.

With the passport accounted for, the plan shifts toward leaving for Dubai. Sujatha rests her head on Rajeev’s shoulder as they prepare to move on from the village, signaling a cautious reunion and a new beginning.

Sujatha and Rajeev (with their daughter) board a flight back to Dubai, and she finds solace in Rajeev’s embrace as they begin a fresh chapter together. The journey closes the circle of longing, loss, and eventual reunion.
