Gage Sullivan is a restless, once-promising photographer who dreams of covering major news but find herself drifting into the high-stakes world of paparazzi, drawn by better pay and a knack for getting the shot—even as she privately despises the job. After a night where she attempts to bury a shirt stained with blood and checks into a motel using the alias “Julie Summerfield,” she is quickly tracked down by two detectives who reveal her true identity. She explains her career trajectory and the ambivalence she feels toward chasing celebrity images, acknowledging that her talent makes her effective even if the trade leaves her uneasy.
Her private life grows increasingly unsettled as an unknown stalker starts photographing and taunting her, breaking into her home and leaving ominous traces meant to frighten her. Gage reaches out to the police, but the reports fail to gain traction, leaving her with a sense that she must handle the danger herself while continuing to work the beat she knows best.
In an effort to sharpen her edge, she slips into a private health club with the help of her assistant Casey Roper, where she witnesses the April Indigo rise to stardom while indulging in cocaine at a glamorous party. This encounter—captured through Gage’s camera and her own wry observations—highlights the blurred lines between fame and excess that pervade the world she covers. After slipping away from the scene with Casey’s help, the stalker intensifies his presence, trailing her and leaving new signs that she’s being watched.
To regain a sense of safety, she enlists a security man named Nick Angel to help her reinvent her identity and put distance between herself and the unknown pursuer. The plan unfolds as they work to change her name and establish a fresh start, hoping the new life will defuse the threat and give her room to breathe.
During the preparations, Gage uncovers a grim connection: one of the stalker’s old friends—now dead—turns out to have been a victim of her photography years earlier, a revelation that makes the danger feel more personal and longstanding. That evening, they break into a library to learn more about the supposed new identity she will adopt, and when they return home, Gage finds one of the stalker’s trademarks left at her door, signaling that the danger is closer than ever.
The next morning brings a devastating development: photographs of Casey being mutilated and murdered arrive, shattering any sense of security. In a moment of desperation, Gage turns to Gadger, a volatile hit man, and asks him to kill the stalker for a price of $150,000, with strict instructions to disappear far from people and to keep Nick out of the plan.
Meanwhile, Nick has his own risky move, breaking into Gadger’s apartment and discovering that Gadger is the stalker and Casey’s killer. He heads to the abandoned house where Gage is staying, only to be confronted by Gadger, who shoots him after feeling betrayed by the pair. Gadger orders Gage to discard the bloody clothes and to check into a motel, leaving Nick for dead as the danger escalates.
With the detectives closing in on the whereabouts of Badger, the nicknamed mastermind behind the thread of violence, Gage and the police craft a plan to outsmart the con artists who have tangled her life in a web of deceit. Gage goes to Gadger’s place under the pretense of a new exchange, hoping to secure previously stolen money, while Linus—one of the force’s most effective decoys—poses as the supposed threat. Through a listening device and a sting operation, Gage learns that the three con artists are turning on each other as the trap tightens.
In a tense money exchange, Linus acts as the fake threat, and Gage uses the opportunity to blindfire with blanks, feigning a kill to scare Gadger away and recover the funds. When the dust settles, it becomes clear that Linus may not be as easily dismissed as a memory, and Gage fears that she may have actually eliminated someone who was only pretending to threaten her. Valerie, the mastermind at the root of the scheme, is revealed to be connected to Gadger, who brings the money back to her after the attempted sting. Valerie then blows up Gadger’s car, and Casey and Nick shoot Valerie in a climactic confrontation; Casey also fatally wounds Nick in a misguided bid to finish the job, and a fire erupts that forces Gage to flee. Rather than surrender to authorities, she disappears into the shadows, faking her own death and reclaiming control over her life by adopting the alias Margaret Mudge and reveling in the wealth gained from the con, all while quietly savoring her freedom and her heritage.
