Stolen Kiss

Antoine is discharged from the army as unfit and returns to civilian life. He has written voluminous letters to Christine, but she has not replied, casting doubt on their relationship.

Christine is away skiing when Antoine visits her home, where her parents entertain him and learn he needs a job. They arrange a position as a night clerk at the Hôtel Alsina, and he spends most of his nights reading there.

Christine comes to see him at the hotel and, after such a long separation, they seem to hit it off again. The old attraction rekindles despite the time apart.

A man with a private detective reveals a room where a wife is sharing a bed with another man. The husband trashes the room, and Antoine is blamed for the commotion and loses his job.

Despite being fired, Antoine befriends the detective and is hired at his agency, where he learns the tricks of the trade and shadows begin to shape his skills.

While following a subject, Antoine runs into Colette, the woman from his past who has married Albert Tazzi and has a child. The encounter complicates both his romance and his focus on surveillance.

Georges Tabard visits the agency seeking help about his reputation. Antoine pretends to be a stock boy to investigate, and ends up falling for Georges's wife Fabienne, who seduces him.

Feeling the situation with Christine is hopeless, Antoine ends their relationship, saying he has never admired her. The agency suspects Fabienne of cheating, forcing Antoine to confess. On the same day, he is fired and his mentor dies.

Antoine turns to TV repair work and keeps his distance from Christine. A driving mishap leads to a minor accident where he crashes into Christine's dad's car, but no one is hurt and forgiveness follows.

Christine sabotages her TV to draw Antoine back, intentionally stalling repairs. He endures a long, imperfect repair attempt, but the effort rekindles their relationship and they sleep together. The next morning, Antoine proposes and she accepts.

The couple walks through a park after their engagement. A man who has followed Christine for days declares his love as permanent, which Christine finds absurd. Antoine recognizes the pattern in his own behavior and mutters, 'He must be'.
