As pilots-in-training, Philo Henderson and George Bunkle are focused on landing their aircraft when disaster strikes — Philo accidentally knocks out his contact lenses. This incident leads to an intense sequence of events culminating in a plane crash into a towering Los Angeles skyscraper. Although such mayhem typically incites panic, it turns out to be just a simulated exercise at a prestigious aviation school. Following their unsatisfactory performance, both Philo and George find themselves dismissed from the program, leaving them in search of new opportunities.

In an unexpected twist, they decide to enroll at Weidermeyer Academy, a highly regarded institution specializing in training flight attendants. This new chapter introduces them to a colorful cast of fellow students, including Wanda Polanski, a former wrestler facing wedding dilemmas after her fiancé backs out; Jolean Winters, a self-conscious plus-sized individual striving for acceptance; Sugar Dubois, a former sex worker looking to reinvent herself; Larry Falkwell, an openly gay man seeking a fresh start; and Kelly Johnson, an adorably clumsy young woman whose coordination often leads to chaos.

Together, this eclectic group faces the challenges of their rigorous training program, which encompasses various aspects, including emergency protocols, etiquette lessons, and counter-terrorism training. A significant element of their studies involves operating a full-scale mock aircraft, where they must cater to a range of demanding passengers, from bratty children to a disgruntled former NFL player who blatantly disregards the rules.

As weeks go by, this once-disparate crew begins to bond, with George gradually gaining confidence in his new role and Philo forming a surprising friendship with Kelly Johnson, often referred to as “the jinx girl,” as they each contend with vision-related hurdles. However, their reputation catches the attention of Miss Grummet, the stern school dean, who views their class as simply glamorous “flying waitresses,” rather than recognizing their diverse backgrounds. After graduation, she exploits her position to manipulate job placements, ensuring that their classmates land lucrative roles with top airlines like Delta, Pan Am, or TWA, while Philo and his crew find themselves assigned to Stromboli Air, a struggling airline teetering on the edge of collapse unless their upcoming flight is a success.

Faced with the pressure of a possible FAA evaluator on board, the group pledges to work cohesively to ensure the flight’s profitability. Miss Grummet sees this as an opportunity to supervise them closely, taking the role of purser in this high-stakes scenario. The flight, filled with a mix of ordinary businessmen and attendees from a blind people’s convention, is set to become chaotic when an unexpected storm hits, revealing a nefarious plot involving a “mad bomber.”

In a twist of dark irony, this calculated individual quietly drugs the drink of a nearby passenger and, amid the turbulence, plants a bomb under a seat before incapacitating the pilot and leaping into the sky, creating a whirlwind of panic. As the chaos ensues, one blind passenger inadvertently stumbles into the captain’s cabin, activating the controls with a white cane, further complicating the situation.

Meanwhile, Kelly uncovers the device, prompting an urgent evacuation of the aircraft’s rear. In a courageous effort, George and Jolean try to disarm the bomb, but find themselves fleeing as time runs out. The explosion that follows creates a gaping hole in the plane’s fuselage, fortuitously sealed by Jolean’s ample form, which keeps them airborne. In the cockpit, Philo grapples with controlling the aircraft, sharing his unique visual challenges with Kelly. As she inadvertently helps him regain clarity by adjusting his binoculars, Philo successfully navigates the aircraft toward safety.

The story culminates in a high-stakes courtroom drama, where the future of the flight attendants and their airline hinges on an evaluation of their actions during the flight. Unbeknownst to them, an undercover evaluator has been observing the chaos, closely situated beside the would-be bomber, who has been subdued by Sugar’s surprisingly effective charm. As the evaluator testifies that “This was, without a doubt, the most exhilarating flight I’ve ever experienced,” the court case is dismissed, leading to widespread celebration among the newfound friends.
