St. Trinian's (2009) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of St. Trinian's (2009), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

St Trinian’s is a chaotic school in London dedicated to unruly girls who band together to rescue their institution from financial ruin by plotting to steal the painting Girl With A Pearl Earring. The story unfolds as Annabel Fritton (Talulah Riley) joins the school and quickly encounters Kelly (Gemma Arterton), the school’s reigning ‘queen bee’. As Kelly introduces Annabel to the various cliques—and their distinct personalities—like the Posh Totty, Chavs, Emos, Geeks, and First Years, Annabel faces a humiliating first night where her towel and robe are swiped while she showers. This unexpected embarrassment leads her to call her father, Mr. Fritton (Rupert Everett), demanding to be taken out of the school.

Things take an interesting turn when Flash Harry pays a visit, offering a deal regarding some lab-created vodka. Subsequently, the students gear up for a hockey match against Annabel’s previous school, Cheltenham Ladies College, captained by Verity Thwaites (Lucy Punch), the education minister’s daughter, Geoffrey Thwaites (Colin Firth), further raising the stakes. The match descends into chaos as the girls give a less-than-warm reception, resulting in a brawl.

As the plot thickens, Annabel listens in on a conversation between her father and Mrs. Fritton and learns that he feels she doesn’t belong to their family, devastating her. Mrs. Fritton reaches out to Annabel, helping her process her feelings and inviting her to embrace her place at St Trinian’s. With a supportive makeover from her peers, Annabel starts to feel at home. Meanwhile, pressures mount as Geoffrey Thwaites investigates the school and the bank threatens its closure.

Upon hearing about the potential shutdown, Kelly rallies the girls, devising a plan to save their school by aiming for the finals of the School Challenge and obtaining the coveted painting. In an entertaining twist, Annabel negotiates with Flash Harry to pose as a German art dealer; initially hesitant, he agrees, partly due to his feelings for Kelly. The school’s challenge team, consisting of three Posh Totty girls—Chelsea, Peaches, and Chloe—cheats their way to the finals.

During the final, Kelly, Taylor (Kathryn Drysdale), and Andrea (Paloma Faith) manage to circumvent security to rescue the coveted artwork. However, complications arise when the cable they used to escape snaps, leaving Kelly stranded. In a show of support, Mrs. Fritton intervenes, knocking out Geoffrey to assist Kelly, while Annabel tends to the beleaguered Verity.

Ultimately, the girls successfully steal the painting, selling it to Carnaby Fritton who remains blissfully unaware that it’s a replica. With the reward of £50,000 for returning the original painting and the proceeds from Carnaby, they settle their debts with the bank, securing St Trinian’s future and preventing its closure.
